major depression/severe anxiety

Posted by Elizabeth on February 11, 2000, at 13:45:44

I suffer from major depression and severe anxiety
(PTSD and PD) Currently on 100mg zoloft,
25mg elavil, and klonopin .5 as needed. Problem
is I am still incredibly anxious --even with the
klonopin. Any suggestions?

Thanks, this is my first post here-and i hope
someone can help.

James here....

2 years, any results ? With issues like PTSD it is slow going but at 2 years you should see some improvement.

There are results, but with my family history
of mental illness I am wondering if I just
don't have some screwed up brain chemsistry.

Thanks for responding.

James here.....

If the meds you are taking are doing some good try higher doses. It is not uncommon that PTSD requires higher doses, often higher than the max recommended. I guess you are taking elivil at PM for sleep ? Try 50-75 mgs as it is sedating so it will help with anxiety. I would try upping the Zoloft, too. Till the dose changes
take hold up the Klonioin as it will help at once and it sounds like you are really suffering. Of course you need to check with your doc but you seem to be in considerable distress.

If you try Zoloft at a higher dose for several months with no result I would try another AD. You might search the net and see what AD's are currently being used in PTSD.

I also have been diagnosed with PTSD, AND have a family with a history of mental illness. I used to get this feeling inside, like I was a time bomb waiting to explode. I would get road rage like feelings when I was driving. When I went to a store, I would begin to feel like I couldn't breath, and I even walked out of work one day, for no apparent reason, all of a sudden I felt like I was going to explode. Is that 'anxiety'?
When my prozac was working good, those feelings subsided. Now I am experiencing prozac poop-out according to some people this site. I have an appt with my pdoc next week. Hope he will give me Naltrexone to augment my prozac and make it start working again. Have you tried prozac?

Elizabeth - Sef may be on to something. I have seen Prozac work in PTSD. Maybe the long half-life of Prozac, as opposed to the shorter half-life of Zoloft, may be the difference. Ask your doctor, this may be worth a try. Good luck - Cam W.

I used to think that I was a hopeless case too. But that
was years ago! I had major depression and severe anxiety
also. I take Nardil and also used to take Ativan.
I don't need the Ativan anymore. The problem with
Nardil is that there are food restrictions and that
getting off of it is difficult. However, for me,
it's well worth the problems. I was not functioning at
all before I started taking Nardil. Nardil works specifically
well with severe anxiety and depression. I'd talk to
your Dr. about it. It's an older drug and of course
everyone likes to prescribe the new and exciting stuff.
Maybe do some research on your own?
Hope this helps!

Hi everyone

and thanks for your replies/insights etc...
my pdoc-decided to up my dose zoloft
provided my elavil levels are ok. She's waiting
for blood tests to come back. If they don't
come back today i am in limbo for a couple of
weeks because she is going on vacation.

She also gave me xanax to try because the klonopin
makes me sleepy.

If the upped dose of zoloft doesn't solve the
problem then we will try another AD. She said
that if we could solve the anxiety/depression
with only one pill (and a couple of PRN's -like
klono, trazadone, etc) that is optimal. Otherwise
we'll consider adding mood stabilizer.
