Anybody Gain Weight or Get Bloated on Serzone?

Posted by Snowie on January 12, 2000, at 18:12:27

Anybody gain or gaining weight or maybe just bloated on Serzone? I'm taking 100 mg. per day and I've noticed I'm either quite bloated or gaining weight. My understanding when I started taking Serzone was that it doesn't affect weight. My diet hasn't changed at all. Any comment?

When I first began Serzone in September I did indeed become bloated! My tummy looked like I was "with child". I have since lost 15 pounds, however, and am no longer bloated.

Hi,

I have been on 600 mg of serzone a day since June and I have lost weight since then.

But I think different people might react differently? Are you on any other new meds? Last summer I gained 17 pounds in a week on a hypertension medication. Stopped the meds, was prescribed a fairly strong diuretic, and lost it all in 3 days. My Dr. said he had nevr had another patient react that way to that drug. Go figure.

CG,

How long did it take the bloatedness to go away? Do you still take Serzone? Thanks!

Plum,

The only other meds I take are 1.5 mg. per day of alprazolam, and occasionally Prevacid in the morning for reflux. It would be great if I could eventually replace alprazolam with a higher dose of Serzone, but this weight gain/water retention has me nervous.

I took Serzone for a few months, at a max. dose of 450 mg/day. I LOST weight (about 6 lbs). The AD I gained weight on were Prozac, Luvox, and Zoloft (esp. Zoloft). I'm losing weight again on Effexor. Guess everybody's different. Effexor does seem to give me some stomach distress but nothing I can't live with.--Cindy W

Cindy,

Did you go off Serzone, and if so, why? I've only been on it for a few weeks. I've also tried Effexor XR, but it made me nervous and nauseated.

Snowie:

I had the opposite experience. the Serzone cut my appetite at first, but it eventually cut my tolerance for healthy food and made me crave fats and sweets al little. No significant boating or weight gain, though.

now with WB added, I have no appetite until dinner time.

Craig,

Well, that's the strange part -- my appetite hasn't changed ... in fact, I seem to be eating less too. I'm hoping it's like CG said, just a temporary thing that will eventually go away. I've noticed that I'm not urinating as often as I normally do, so maybe I'm retaining water which may be causing the swelling and bloating. My abdomen also looks like I'm "with child", so I'm going to hang in there a while longer and wait for the side effects to go away.

Thanks for all the posts ... I'm relieved and I'll continue to take it. So far, it seems to be helping. Dare I ask if anyone has suffered any sexual dysfunction while taking it?

Snowie, I'm happy to report that Serzone had NO sexually adverse side effects!!! That's why I tried it in the first place, because my psydoc said it was known to not interfere (unlike SSRI's). Good luck to you!--Cindy W

Oh, great ... just what I had heard, but since I've only been taking it a few weeks I wanted to hear it from people who've actually been taking it for a while. Thanks for the info, Cindy.

Snowie: I also was bloated at first on Serzone, but this soon went away. I think mine, too, was due to water retention. Drinking lots of water and avoiding salty foods really helped. Also, I had NO sexual side effects at all with Serzone. I took it from the month it was released for about 2 1/2 years. My only complaint with it was some sedation and low blood pressure. The reason I had to switch to another med is that I needed to increase the dose, but couldn't because my blood pressure was too low. I took 300 mg/day, but couldn't go up to 450. I had a little bit of dizziness at first, but this too subsided. Good luck and let us know how you're doing! --lynn

Really cannot get answer as to why the docs put her
on it. She suffered a broken back about 1.5 years
ago and connot get rid of the pain.
She has always had a pregnant look about her anyway.
She says her weight has gone upwards.
She is self conscious about being naked anyway.
Sex never was an explosion with us anyway.
She can only experience orgasm when on top, Thats
ok but this is the only way she can have orgasm.
Not even oral sex,vibrators nothing.
Her cummer is broken. Any one else heard of this.?

type of sexual orgasms she cannot cum unless
she is on top then maybe not at all.
I have tried everything, Dildos, vibrators, orally,
sucking hard and soft trying to please her in
everyway. No success. The word is If at first you
don't suck seed, then suck suck, suck till you do
suck seed. Ive sucked licked and vibrated her
till i finally gave up. Now she is mad, depressed
But so am I.Any body have a clue. She is also on

There can be so many reasons why a woman doesn't orgasim. It very well could be Effexor. Sexual dysfunction is a common side effect of many anti-depressants.

Why don't you ask her if she knows why she hasn't been having orgasims lately. Can she still please herself? Or ask her to show you what she likes?

Anyways I wouldn't get uptight about it becuase this could make the situation worse. I wouldn't worry about your skill level either. Just ask her! Good luck, Janice

Hi Michael. Sorry about your dilema. It could be the depakote. My husband and I had a great sex life until I started taking it. Now I feel nothing. So maybe start with that.
