Effexor plus buspar for sexual desire as needed?

Posted by Terri on July 28, 1999, at 21:43:56

I have been on 75 mg. effexor SR for 8 weeks. This is better than any other AD I've tried. I actually feel normal except for 1 thing - No sexual desire. I am able to orgasm fine, but don't have the desire.

I went to see my doctor today and asked about adding buspar and increasing my effexor. She increased Effexor to 150mg,. and gave me a sample of Buspar - said to try it for a month and if it worked, she would give me a perscription. She said to start with 5mg. If that did not work try 10mg up to 15mg to see which dosage worked. The thing that bothers me about this is that she said to take buspar 2 hours before sex, only on the days when sex is planned. This seems odd to me as I would think I should take it daily to work up in my system. Not on an as needed/anticipated basis.

Is this the common way it is prescribed? I don't want it to not work because I'm not using daily.

Does anyone have any experinece with these two drugs together? If so, how much, how often and was it successful?

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Terri,
From my experience, it sounds like your doc. is doing the opposite of what should help. All the SSRI's and SSNRI's come w/sexual side effects, but they worsen, as do all side effects, at a higher dosage. Check out the loads of info. under SSRI's and sexual dysfunction on the main psychopharm. tips page. Seems like adding Wellbutrin, or even ginko biloba has worked for many. Scaling back my dosage worked for me. Buspar didn't help at all. Good luck! Paul

I don't get it. Buspar is not an "as needed" medication. It's normally dosed three times per day, takes a week before you feel anything and about a month to get the full benefit. It has worked well for me with prozac and ginko.
