pergolide/cushings

Posted by sandra on July 16, 1999, at 12:14:18

I am having trouble accessing these items. I saw a title on a search under cushings about pergolide and not treating a horse unless bad feet etc. My horse does have cushings, and has developed laminitis, has suppressed immune function, ie cannot fight off infections...foot abscesses, skins problems, conjunctivitis, etc. One of my vets has instructed me to find a affordable source of pergolide and he will prescribe it.
Did you have information on this? Thanks.

Founder is more common in cushingoid horses. So are most of the other symptoms you mentioned.

Pergolide is said to work well on all symptoms, better than ciproheptidine. I would try the nearest vet schools, health departments, animal control departments, retirement homes, nursing homes, etc. Someone somewhere in those places will be able to tell you of a good source for an inexpensive yet reliable source. Be prepared, though, to be spending a lot of money on it. Since it's used for people, and horses are bigger than people, the cost is likely to be rather high no matter what you do.

If you do find a good mail order site, would you post it here please? My aged mare has it too.
