Will ECT work this time?

Posted by Kathy Martin on July 9, 1999, at 21:34:43

I have had three different series of ECT treatments in
the past. The first in 1976 really cured me completely
of depression. The other two in 1993 and 1996 were not
very sucessful. Why did it work so well the first time.
I was told that bilateral treatments work better than
unilateral which I got in 1996. I have tried just about
every medication out there and nothing has gotten rid of
this very painful 3 year old depression. I am desperate
and I am considering ECT again. I just can't go on like this.
Any comments greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Kathy

Bilateral does tend to be more effective. It may cause a bit more in the way of side effects (which is why they don't always use it), but I assume that as an ECT veteran you are not too concerned with that. I suppose it is worth a try.

Hi, Kathy,

Did you get my e-mail? And what did you think of my thoughts and arguements?

Please keep in touch.

Just a comment about bi-lateral treatment. I had two series of ECT, the second being bi-lateral. I had significant cognitive side effects and actually had to stop the treatment. Among the problems was not knowing how to get places that I was very familiar with (like my sister's). I also had trouble retaining new information. It took a number of months for the side effects to dissipate and I am still having memory problems. My only thought is to be sure you've given med combos a try. If you live near a medical school you might see if you can find a psychopharmacologist to consult with. Being affiliated with a med school the person is more likely to be up on the latest latest.
Post again if you have more questions.
