bipolar with a shink who doesn't listen

Posted by CeeCee on May 6, 1999, at 23:03:54

I've been diagnosed with bipolar. I'm currently on Effexor 75 mg daily for the depression. I have severe mood swings that change from day to day, moment to moment. A lot of days I feel like I'm on the verge on violence because I get so angry and upset over the slightest thing. I have a military assigned shrink who doesn't seem to listen to me and what I'm going through (actually, it's what my family is going through). I think I should be on a mood stabilizer--he said I could have one if I really wanted one, but that was it. I had to ask to be put on Effexor because Paxil and Zoloft made me more irritable and my familiy was miserable.

I can't change Dr.s, but maybe someone could give me some info so I can get the meds I need. I have been in talk therapy--it didn't help the mood swings or the anger.

Hi CeeCee,

I think you should definitely try getting on a mood stabalizer. I hear neurontin(gabapentin) is a good one to try(try looking it up in psychopharmachology tips). I'm currently on it now. I'm also on effexor 150 mg. IT's too soon to tell if it is working for me or not, as it has only been three days. Also if the irrability is really unbearable, perhaps you can try an anti-psychotic like risperdal or zyprexa. However it is probably not the best path to go longterm. Risperdal did help my agitation and irritability but at the cost of causing akathisia.you may also try a benzo like xanax or klonopin -i'd try that before i'd try an anti-psychotic. If your doctor is not helpful and you cannot change doctors, then get as educated as you can about your illness and the availble treatments. Then relay this information to your doctor in a convincing way so that you can begin to try different medications. Trial and error is the only way you will find what works for you. Sorry you are having so many difficulties.
