Sweating on Effexor

Posted by Toby on April 13, 1999, at 14:06:46

I have a patient who has had her depression effectively wiped out by Effexor BUT...she has had excessive sweating since she started it about 5 months ago. We tried decreasing the dose but the depression returned so bumped it back to the effective dose, 225mg per day. It occurs all hours of the day and just soaks her clothes and sheets. She says it wouldn't be so bad but it is now causing an increase in some of her lab values related to her kidneys (BUN) and her family doctor wants her to try to come off it. She's drinking a lot of fluid without any change in her labs. I haven't had any other patients with that side effect and the company rep doesn't have any information that could help her. Has anybody had this side effect and was there anything that helped or did you have to stop the medication altogether? Thanks.

James here...

I take 300-450 mgs and was already a sweater (thanks dad for the genes !) so I take it at nite b4 bedtime (whole dose) and sleep in a cool room. I am a classical singer and drink lots of water ( 1 gal a day or I don't have the high b natural, c, and c#)

Is this person really drinking enough water ? Few people do. For me any time I up the dose or restart Effexor the sweating is worse for a day or so. Moving to the south west helped me also.

I remember seeing some tips on Dr. Bobs site...if you have not seen them already.

LOL...LOL...Would REALLY tight pants help you reach those high notes (you KNOW I'm just teasing)??? Hee Hee Hee...I'm really getting a good laugh out of this whole forum, today. Thanks everybody!

I live in Las Vegas, so I too, must drink a lot of water. I also take 300mgs Effexor (half of it at bedtime). It gives me itchy-scratchies (back, arms, legs...only since I've been taking Effexor), sweating, dry mouth (no, I don't sit around all day with my mouth hanging open...LOL).
But, it's the only AD of the many kinds I've tried
that is effective, right now. So, even if this drug kills me, I'm staying on it. Hee hee...but, remember that I'm chronocally suicidal when I'm depressed.

But, seriously, I'm going to have to look into this issue. I hadn't realized, until now, that there may be some deadly side-effects with Effexor.

Thanks for the info.
Nancy

I've had severe night sweats as a side-effect of both Zoloft and trazadone. My doctor sent me to a psychopharmacologist who suggested using the dose of trazadone that I could tolerate and augmenting it with another low-dose SSRI. I'm currently trying a combo of trazadone and serzone (I have problems with sleep, so the sedating effects are good for me if I take them at night).
So far, no sweating, but it's too soon to tell how good an AD response I can get. Can Effexor be combined with anything to augment it? (It's fun to try to be of help to Toby, after all the help we've gotten from you!)

Hi, I just stopped taking Effexor xr today. I did experience a lot of sweating at night time while on it. I was up to 225 mg, which my doctor told me was the maximum dosage and I was still experiencing depression, so I stopped taking it and just started serzone today. In terms of side-effects, the Effexor was really good, the only bad thing was the sweating, but that only happened at bed time so it was pretty tolerable. I hope I didn't go off of it too soon.

You can try clonidine 0.1mg nocte, or oxybutinin or doxazosin (can't remember the doses just at present as have only heard Sussman talk about this, but not tried these myself). These strategies are sometimes effective, but it can be a real problem. Also helpful is cotton sheets, no nightwear and reduce air humidity if she can in order to promote drying of sweat.

Let me know what works

Nick
