Effexor and bleeding - women only need apply!

Posted by bigbertha on March 2, 1999, at 17:35:26

Sorry guys, but if you have any indirect
experience, I'm all ears.

Ok ladies - has anyone else had this problem?
It is the ONLY thing about Effexor that I'm having
a tough time with. This isn't bleeding, it's
slaughter-house!

I see my doc this Thursday - suggestions? If I change
AD is there a logical choice?
Thanks to everyone!

Most of the females I know who take Effexor are under the age of 35. Since I don't know your age, this is only a guess.........any chance at all that this could be related to menepause? (That "slaughter-house" reference sure rang a bell for me!)

>At higher doses effexor has dopaminergic effects. Speaking from personal experience, while I was on Sinemet (dopamine used for movement disorders) there was a huge increase in flow. On the other hand, it had nice sexual side-effects as well. Always a silver lining as they say. . .

For my gal-pals, a big thanks for responding!

Yep - I've been in menopause since I was 32 and have
taken Premarin (estrogen) until 3 months ago when I started
bleeding like crazy. I need to weigh the pros
/cons of use v. nonuse of Premarin with Effexor.
Menopausal symptoms are not too bad (I've read where AD's
are being used to help with PMS, menopause, etc) but
long-term benefits of estrogen need to be considered
in my case. So perhaps a change to Prozac, etc. is an
option. Will keep ya' posted!

Wow! And I thought I was on the young side when I began menapause! Geesh! Why don't you ask you Ob/gyn about Prepro and see if you can get that problem straightened out before trying the other angle. I really think that's where the problem does lie. I truly can't remember *anyone* having this problem due to antidepressants. (Some lactating on occasion, but not heavy flow.)

You probably should get your hormones retested while on Effexor, if you want to stay with it. I had a greater converstion of estrogen to testosterone on an AD, which for one thing, caused very heavier bleeding and longer cycles.

Patty/Anita-

Your comments are great help and two things I will
speak with my Gyn. about. My shrink gave me Prozac
but I really feel good on Effexor (although I think
dosing on alternate days with Prozac could help me
reduce the total Effexor consumed), so there may
be another solution.
Once again, this forum ROCKS with the most intelligent
and resourceful people. But WE ALWAYS KNEW THAT!
