Verapamil and bipolar illness

Posted by Reid Finlayson on June 17, 1998, at 17:24:03

Dear Dr. Bob

I am looking for evidence and opinion around the use
of verapamil to stablize bipolar illness where lithium
side effects like weight gain, memory loss, oedema,
polyuria are problematic. The changeover would be
slow and gradual. What is know about previous lithium
responders maintaining mood stability on verapamil
alone?

Although verapamil is sometimes used for bipolar
illness, I think usually anticonvulsants like
valproate would be considered the meds to try after
lithium...

I am asking about the questions regarding the use of verapamil, in use with Depakote for bipolar illness. Is dizziness and weight gain a common side effect from the drug. How is it supossed to help those with severe migraine headaches. I have been recently diagnosed gone through a few inpatient programs because of suicidal ideations, loss of memory and just the ability to cope with not being able to remain stable, hold down a job, raise two kids, have daily cluster migraines along with DJD of the cervical spine. I really need some answers.

Dear Dr. Bob

The thread I am reading is from 1998. It is now September 2000. Is there anymore research or information on the use of Verapamil for the treatment of bipolar illness? I suffer from Mytro-valve prolapse, hyper-thyroid and am post-menapausal due to a hysterectomy. It would be nice to treat the mytro-valve prolapse and bipolar with the same drug... Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on this?
