PLZ help me get off Wellburtin XL

Posted by redscarlet on June 22, 2005, at 21:09:52

I take 450mg every morning

A: Do I taper off this med ?

B: Can I just stop taking this med at once ?

C: If I have to taper off how would I do that, I have 300 & 150 mg tablets ?

I REALLY want off this med as soon as possible !!!

No answer from the Withdrawal board ! I Think more people come to this board ?!?!?

Thank You... :-)

Hi.

I'm sorry that you didn't get any replies over on the Withdrawal board.

Wellbutrin in not generally regarded as a drug that is difficult to discontinue. It might not matter much how you go about it. I would ask your doctor how he would like for you to taper it.

Why must you discontinue it so quickly?

Hi Scott and Thanks for the replay... :-)

I want to stop the Wellburtin because it's interfering with my sleep.
And I've never thought it did that much for me anyway.
I don't see my pdoc for another three weeks and I don't want to call him just for this, he wouldn't mind if I stopped it.
I've started and stopped other meds over the last five years and he has no problem with it. He's a GREAT pdoc, knows it's my life and my choice.
I just don't know if I can stop all at once, which I prefer or if I need to taper off.
I have in fact as of today just taken 300mgs and not the full 450mgs. But now what ?
Any ideas ?.... Thanks

dont know XL but I found tapering from SR quite difficult. 450 - 300 wasnt bad - its past that point....Ok so my suggestion....
go to 300, STAY there for a aweek, then go to 150. You are emphasizing fast so Im not describing what I would do myself.

For me I would go down to 300 and stay for a week minimium...then alternate between 300 and 150 for another week or so, then 150...then alternate 150 with nothing. But i found it really hard tapering so thats just me.
basicly the longer you can stay at a lower dose while tapering the better Ive found it

Good Luck!

Hi Raino!

Did you have withdrawal symptoms? What symptoms did you have?

I think you can reduce the dosage very quickly. I have discontinued Wellbutrin 300mg abruptly without any adverse effects. It is difficult to want to suggest to others that they do something similar because of the uncertainty that every individual would have the same reaction. It would be more prudent to establish at least some kind of taper plan.

To be prudent, I guess you can drop the dosage of Wellbutrin by 75mg every three days. You should be able to discontinue Wellbutrin within two weeks.

Another possibility is to cut the dosage by half every five days. It might be more convenient to break up the pills this way.

This is all guess work, but I can't think of any reason a quick taper cannot be used.

For me, I would not be afraid to reduce the dosage every three days 300mg -> 150mg -> 75mg -> 0mg. I just feel uncomfortable telling someone else to do the same thing without having more data.

Hopefully, you will get more feedback.

I read that discontinuing too quickly can cause severe seizures in some people.

Please don't worry about calling our pdoc "just" about this.

There's no "just" about it for everyone and it is always better to be safe than sorry.

That's my humble opinion anyway...

I checked the wellbutrin.com website, and skimmed through the prescribing information. I found no clear indication one way or the other on suddent discontinuation vs. tapering. Definitely check with your doctor, it's worth it, this is your health.

However, the prescribing information was very clear that Wellbutrin should be discontinued if a seizure is experienced.

Sorry we on the withdrawal board were asleep, but it looks like others woke up. Good luck!
