Mountain Lion!

Posted by beckett2 on February 24, 2019, at 19:07:55

We've met a mountain lion on our road twice now. Big, too. Just below my husband's hip! (We were in our car.)

There was that mountain lion story out of Colorado. I've spent mental energy running strategies on 'what to do when you meet a mountain lion'. I even dream about it. There is something fantastic about meeting an animal that could easily kill you (in my staid life). Quite an adrenaline rush.

We don't want to let our house cat out any longer.

How far from your house?

Was the Colorado mountain lion the one who appeared in all sorts of places?

Like this?

Is this the same as a cougar?

I'm bad at distances. An eighth of a mile? Maybe less.

And yes, Puma (concolor), cougar....

i love big cats. i've never seen one larger than a bobcat up close in person out of a zoo. must be chilling! pumas are gigantic!

my beloved cat was killed by a bobcat a few years ago. unfortunately i heard it happen but it was too late, and at night, and i could not rescue him. now i do not let my cats outside except on a leash.

We lost a cat about ten years back. Broke my heart to find his fur in the orchard. My assumption was a coyote.

Bobcats are wicked cute! There was one that sat near a path I regularly walked. He or she would sit at a short distance, sunning and licking themselves, totally nonchalant as any cat.

We're thinking of building a catico for our cat.

Have you ever been out walking and heard that?

I used to love hiking, but had a very bad hiking accident 14 years ago (shattered ankle, dislocated foot) and, even after 5 hours of surgery and 6 months of physical therapy, I never regained the full range of motion in my ankle. So I now find it difficult to walk on uneven ground. No more hiking.

But no likely encounters with mountain lion either. My biggest danger walking in the city is wild turkeys. They are everywhere! Once I was out for a walk and six turkeys surrounded me and were pecking at me. I yelled and swung my bag at them but they kept at it and chased me down the street (a quiet residential street -everyone at work, no traffic). Then a woman drove by, stopped, rolled down her window and shouted - "get in the car!", so I made my getaway

I have never seen a sugar glider. They are very cute in the photos. Alex says she remembers them fondly from Canberra.

I haven't seen her here lately.

Not that I recall. Only recently did I learn they have a range of unusual sounds. We heard a very strange sound out by the henhouse one night. Ran out to find one of our sweet roosters with a chunk missing.

(He survived after a zillion stitches.)

Don't know what it was.

I actually live in a suburb (but a very dense one) surrounded on three sides by Boston. Some lawns, but very few and very small. So yeah, pretty much in Boston. Wild turkeys are everywhere. I said to friend that it shows how secure the food supply is in modern America that turkeys, ducks and geese (not to mention squirrels and pigeons) run all over unmolested. One-hundred years ago, they would all be eaten.

That would be in Cradle Mountain National Park in Tasmania. You remember Richard Flanagan's angry and wonderful article in the Guardian about the fire near The Walls of Jerusalem? He was talking about that country. Native grasses, of which there are not so many left. It makes me furious.

The wild turkeys I looked up seemed similar to the turkeys you eat.

This turkey is not good to eat, so I have been told. (it's a bad sign when the best you can do is talk about which one of these you might eat.
