It gets easier......

Aw, dammit to h***. I hate it. It's often cancer or kidney failure at the elder ages, Is Jules 11, or did you get him when he was a few years old?

I had my buddy Oliver for 16 years, from a 12-week old kitten abandoned behind a shed at my daughter's elementary school. I lost him to chronic kidney failure in July 2008 and I still get choked up from time to time. He was the second best friend I had to....let go, for lack of any adequate words. The first one (girl, Shadow, had her 10 years) I was so chicken I couldn't go into the room with her (severe thyroid disease) and made my poor 18-year old daughter stay with her during the , well, you know....she says it's "okay" now but I was a bad mom. Oliver I held myself, by myself. Was way more peaceful than I had thought.

Anyway....you'll make it. And you know what, Phil (just ignore this as crapola right now but think of it way later...) we have unlimited capacity to love these animals, we really do. I waited 3 years to get another and now have had her two years (Willow, age 6 now) and love her exactly as much. Point is, you will love another furry child/buddy one day.

But boy does it hurt....

Wish I could meet Jules in person. Don't you think they get MI better than just about any human ever could?

Wish I could help....((Phil))

Thanks everyone it means a lot. I got Jules when he was little enough to fit in a baseball glove. Totally fell in love the second I saw him and it's been that way ever since.
I'm going to the store to get something that I hope he eats. If he still can't eat then I'm not going to let him suffer.
Right now he's laying down by the sliding glass door peering out at the world.

Be creative in offering food. When my girl was sick, everyone was offering her chicken and rice and various invalids food. She wouldn't eat at all. They basically sent her home to say goodbye.

But I tossed her a teensy piece of pizza from the table. She caught it and swallowed. After that, when her appetite dropped off, I offered her bold flavors. Croutons were a favorite. I tossed them to her, and the "catching" of the prey seemed to interest her enough to swallow.

It might not work. But it may be worth a try.

Maybe you could try tossing the food?

He's beautiful Phil. And clearly so content in that picture. Did you go out looking for a kitten all those years ago or did you just sort of find each other?

I'm sorry, Phil.

I had to put down the sweetest miniature schnauzer of 16 years. She had heart failure and eventually developed ascites. I waited as long as I could. It was fully apparent to me when her time had come. I couldn't let her suffer even one more hour. My eyes are filling up.

I was in group therapy and everyone was urging me to get a cat. I finally gave in and told a lady friend who was very involved with animals.
She called one day and said a lady had one kitty left and we could meet her at PetsMart. I still wasn't sure.
The lady came in with a big carrier. When she got to us and turned the cage around and saw this little orange ball. It was love at first site.

I'm sorry Scott. And I know kind of how you feel. I'm usually teared up and it's going to be so hard to hold Jules and tell him I love him when he sleeps the last sleep.
I'm not going to handle it well but I have to know it's the right thing to do.
The vet said, basically, this would be a better route for humans too. I'll agree./

Yeah. And this morning. He's really weak but so far he still does what he needs to do. There will be a pretty fast decline though and it will be soon.

Phil,

I'm so sorry about Jules. It's often harder with our furry ones than humans--they can't complain or express how they feel. I've had a few dogs but my current girl is like a soul mate. A few years ago, I had a seizure from stopping meds and was stuck lying on the floor for a while before I could get any help. She came up to me and sat in the crook of my neck until help came.

Hang in there :(.

I had to learn cat lingo when I got him. But like you, they get it.
If I was having a bad day he would jump on the bed, get right next to me as if to say, you'll be alright. Let me know what I can do.

Jules was clearly a very special cat. That has come thru every time you wrote about him. I'm glad you had each other for as long as you did but I'm so sorry you got cheated out of those last years.
