The NRA

Posted by Phil on December 22, 2012, at 17:00:34

I don't want to talk about guns yes or no. But I was just listening the the exec vp of the NRA saying how many people are walking among us and hearing voices?

And we need to have an active national database of the mentally ill.

I'm too exhausted to talk anymore. Thoughts?

I expect the mental-health equivalent of the Patriot Act to be enacted soon. I also expect to see a lot of new "members" on this board.

In Australia back in 2006, a mentaly deranged man enacted one of the worlds worst mass shootings at a small tourist town called Port Arthur.

In the aftermath, our (conservative, right wing) federal government passed laws that

*restricted assult rifles to the defence force and special police units. No more were allowed to be sold, and existing weapons were brought back by the government and destroyed

*persons wanting a firearm had to prove legitimate need (ie, farmer, hunter etc)

*target shooters could have ahdn guns, but they had to be stored in a gun safe at the gun club, they couldnt be taken home

*a person wanting a firearms licence had to be assessed by the police, producre references as to his good character, and there was a 28 day waiting period

The Prime Minister got a lot of flack from the far right, but he pusehd the laws through.

Since then, there hasnt been a mass shooting in Australia (we had had quite a few previously), also, gun related violence and suicides among young men have dropped dramaticly

I know America isnt Australia, but change can be effected if the will is there.

America would rather encourage gun ownership and pass restrictions on mental derangement.

Every one wants to shift the discussion from guns to mental illness, though there is no evidence shooter was mentally ill (except in the general sense that anyone who shoots a class full of little kids is deranged, almost by definition). But yesterday I saw in the paper something about wanting to establish a database of people with mental illness. Well that would include me and probably everyone on this board. And how many of us are violent or have even contemplated violence against anyone but ourselves? That scares me. As it is, I tell no one I work with about my depression and hospitalizations because of the stigma.

Looks like his sole purpose was to redirect my post to a place that no one will see it then left.

Doesn't hurt my feelings but it would be nice to have some consistency in moderation.

I guess it would be nice if Santa was real but that ain't happening either.

I'd have preferred that Lou's deathometer was moved to the trash but I guess it was med related in a warped fashion.

Merry Christmas P.

That's a completely outrageous idea.
I'd be curious to know how one would "qualify" for that database.
The NRA is ri-dic-u-lous!

I can't, for the life of me, imagine how it isn't more important that we address some VERY flawed gun policies.... Like assault rifles??? C'mon now?
Do you have to have a gun straight out of say Rambo or the A-team in order to protect yourself from home intruders (if that is your concern).
It's so freaking warped.
Ugh.... I can only hope common sense, statistics and facts will prevail.

Not so fast.

Won't they suggest that teachers should be armed to protect their students?

Today is my b-day, so I guess I get to rant on a bit more. Some very undiscussed but very important things here...

First off, you are still far more likely to be killed by a 'sane' person than someone with a mental illness. Just having a gun (nevermind nine!) in your home increases the chances that it will likely be used on you (most murders are committed by someone you know) or by you on yourself. (suicide).

You know, here in supposedly 'gun free Canada', you can walk into a Wal-Mart, or a Canadian Tire, and buy ammo and a gun, and get the gun through a very simple registration system. Now, maybe not sub-machine guns, but high-powered rifles, some pistols, etc. Yet, for some reason, we have a very small amount of gun murders, per capita compared with our American friends. We both have kids who play the same violent video games, eat junk food and watch violent movies.

This is NOT to say Canada is a BETTER country, but that maybe the violent history entwined with culture is celebrated too much in America. Too much emphasis on "competition", "me", material things, and involvement in some military operations over the past and current century (Minus WWI and WW2). Simply..maybe a bit too much testosterone. :)

Just my 01.cent take..I mean no offense to anybody.

Jay

I'm not sure which is your national anthem.

This?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa-q-ztyZZw

We changed from a dignified and paranoid 'God Save the Queen' with great lines like.....

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

To a glorification of the landgrab anthem called Advance Australia Fair, one line of which is memorable.....

'Our land is girt by sea'.

some...

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

4 firefighters shot, two dead
