I have only read an interview, but he said nature and art are two things that helps against the desperation. That really sounds interesting.

Both "The Rings of Saturn" and "Austerlitz" open with Sebald talking circumspectly about a depression sufficiently serious to hospitalise him.

Whether that was truth or fiction I don't know. I wondered if it was a little ritual that he liked to go through.
