I think people think I'm stupid

Posted by sleepygirl2 on July 14, 2011, at 16:25:41

Or weird or "crazy"
Whatever it is, I think it amounts to dismissing me or not taking anything I say seriously.
It's a horrible feeling, and it makes me angry because I think it is really arrogant on their part.
How can I interact with people who have so much disrespect?
Why does this upset me so much?

Well, I don't know sg. There is quite a bit of disrespect in the world. Epidemic, really. It can be very invalidating in general even for the 'depression-resistant'.

I can't imagine anyone who knows you thinks of you as stupid. (What a painful word :-/) Maybe some of the people you mention are having their own difficulties coping with stressors?

Ugh. Something happening at work?

I think treating others with disrespect is something some people do to make themselves feel smarter.

You know you aren't stupid. I know you aren't stupid. Hold on to that, and don't let the nasty people get to you.

(Easier said than done, I know.)

I've missed seeing you in chat. I've been occupied in the evenings lately, for some reason.

I have to wonder if the dalai lama would try to make you feel stupid or insignificant? Nah, he's evoled, he's a decent guy and all that is good. all he see's in you is love.
If the dalai lama thinks you rock, why care about what some insecure jerk or b**** thinks?
It's totally other people's problem. don't give them permission to mess with your head. you don't have to be strong, you just have to know.
Make others prove *themselves* to you.

(steps down off the podium)

It's kind of painful to feel rejected and less than.
There's too much criticism.

Thanks Dinah. It's the usual thing at work, lots of gossip and fault finding. I just try not to call attention to myself lest I become a target.
Not interacting with coworkers as much as possible (beyond the pleasantries) seems like a good idea.

Somebody said 'don't be critical, be curious'.
I don't know about that. It'd be nice just to not care what people think of me. I know it's more about them.

when i was, say, 8yo, my stepbrother was 12. i remember him saying,'I don't care what people think of me.' so, i started saying it.

the only difference was that he really didn't care but I did.

I have no idea what my point is here.

I think that depends on the person you interact with and what are your reasons for interacting.

> Why does this upset me so much?

I would be upset, too, if I felt people were treating me as if I were stupid.

What exactly do people do to make you feel stupid? Is it something you do or don't do, or is it something you are or are not? Are these people who treat you this way aware of your challenges with mental illness? Disclosure can lead to stigma and ostracism. This is an unfortunate foible of many members of society.

Not only are you not stupid, but you impress me as being quite smart. I really didn't have to include the previous sentence, but I did because that is what you demonstrate so obviously.

Maybe that it'd be nice if we could say it and mean it?
It would be for me.

Thanks Scott :-)
It's hard to explain. I just know that I am "out of step" with a lot of other people. I very rarely speak to anyone about my issues, taking meds, etc. At work, I absolutely won't disclose anything about that.
I'm afraid that it's obvious anyway. It has been difficult to hide my mood state and anxiety at times.
I work with a highly critical bunch of folks. Joking or not, I've been called "crazy". People talk to me in a manner that suggests that I am incapable of understanding things like they do, that I am incapable of what they do.

Maybe it's just some inborn means of establishing hierarchy within the pack that just persists among us humans. Whatever, but I've never had the luxury of being less than painfully aware of my limitations.
My t points out to me that everyone experiences the same emotions, the same insecurities. I can't help but feel that mine are worse. I could really benefit from some blissful ignorance.

I think for me and maybe you too, it's some kind of primal sence, a non verbal interpersonal body lanquige I send out, or use to send out, that causes people to dissmiss me. I found that place inside myself that centers me and people now treat me different. Everywhere I go people remark how good I look, thinking it's a new hair style or something like that. I get asked out alot now and last week got a possible part time job offer kind of. It's hard to stay in that place, I find myself getting scared of the world expecting me to be normal all the time, I feel panic when my stability is noted. I hope you can find that place inside you that is calm and confident too.

Thanks torrid.
I think you're right. I hope I can find it too. There have been moments. :-)
I hope you keep standing tall.
I'm verging on panic at the moment. I think I'll start running or something since this is a bit much.
