Mad Men

Anyone seen it?

My son is amazed. He says it must have been awesome. Going on picnics, leaving all your crap behind without a care, having such an interesting sense of self.

Very good lines. My favourite character, for example, says to her husband without any sense of doubt
'When Michaelangelo was painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel the rest of the world was living in caves and trying to work out how to make fire'.

Maybe there shouldn't be a space?

It's short for Madison Avenue Men. They are advertising executives helping to create the bright new shiny world.

You would remember how beguiled by science we were then. Anything in a tin or frozen was better. This was before we discovered all the other stuff about it. Anyway, these are the boys who dream up the slogans to hypnotise the masses. Just stuff like 'What do women want?' 'They want the cowboy who brings home the bacon.' That kind of stuff. It has a beautifully written script. I am always delighted to find well written works for film or TV in English because they are so rare. There seems to be this schmaltz through it all, usually as camouflage to smuggle in wholly unjustified ideas of Anglo-Saxon exceptionalism.

It's not a documentary.

How old are the writers?

Mathew Weiner was born in 1965.

He'd been a writer for The Sopranos and seems to be the person with the original conception.

But as we've watched the episodes I think it's the case that each episode is written by one of several writers.

I'm sure people then didn't smoke quite like that, not quite so much, though it's something I remember before dinner at the cocktail hour, an aunt showing me how to fill up this bowl with smoke from the cigarette she was smoking.
