Shitzu and horrible allergies?????

Posted by Phillipa on August 18, 2009, at 12:30:48

A month ago took Chloe to vet and had bladder infection and the scratching on her paws and constant licking vet said allergies but to what? So given a combo steroid and another med and antibiotics as bladder had bacteria. Fur all brown from licking. Now has been off meds that seemed to work and its worse than before so Saturday switched diet to duck and potatoes as vet said next step would be test for food allergies. But today her chest is raw with sores and she's exhausted from scratching and licking called vet not return call. Any idea what this could be? I'm clueless? And I feel like I'm killing her by now knowing. One thing after the other. What to do? Poor baby. And want to see Granddaugter today been a week and feel on call for vet. Did I lose my priorities? Can't even find a proper google search. Phillipa

Phillipa, sorry I can't help (don't know what could be wrong) but I hope you find an answer. Sounds like you're doing everything you can.

No fleas?

Dogs lick for all sorts of reasons, including stress. And once they start, the skin gets irritated and they keep it up. Until it's straightened out why she's doing it, is there any way to keep her from doing it?

They sell something called bitter apple that is supposed to discourage them from chewing themselves, but my dogs who did this appeared to find it quite tasty. An elizabethan collar maybe? Or if it's her feet she's licking, maybe some socks?

I'm not sure how she would have been able to lick her chest though. That's a hard position for a dog. Definitely try the vets again.

And there are some medicated shampoos to cut down on itching.

Our dog had scratched himself hairless, perhaps out of boredom and desperation at his surroundings.

We found that some aloe vera from the garden and a steroid cream fixed it up fairly easily.

Well took Chloe to vets. The Vet was so glad we brought her in as she was raw. Seems that's the call of the day here all the dogs were coming in with the same thing. One lady with a huge dog said she heard on news something about grass in our area. Final outcome shot of cortisone and the follow-up pills Temaril-P part cortisone part antihistamine and allergic diet. She's eating Duck & potatoe formula food only and green beens. Got a bath here. She likes Duck. Hoping it works this time the Vet said that dogs get this can even be allergic to owners, other pets, mites, dust. The list is endless. Ha Ha she will wake Greg to pee tonight. This is the second bout with this. Thanks guys for helping and the Vet only charged for the meds and not the visit $34.00 and visit is $48.00. She could tell we're poor. Our money tree dried up. Love Phillipa seriously she knew how concerned we were about her I felt it was almost abuse that's how bad overnight she looked
