I find it offensive when anyone who is overweight is objectified this way. They are no less human and have no fewer emotions than the rest of us.

Maybe your jokes offer some of us a better way to look at ourselves and the world around us.

I would not want to debate anyone on these points. I am only describing what was my personal reaction to this "fat lady" joke. I am sure that there are other possible reactions.

Friends,
From what is written,[...no less...no fewer..], I would like for interested members to email me if they like with their opinion(s) of the following:
A. Can a person, IYO, of a class that has a disability or be just of a class of people, be used as a subject for others to
derive amusment from on a mental-health forum?
B. Do such, IYO, have the potential to cause feelings of humiliation to members or others that belong to that class in question?
C. Can such, IYO, have the potential to lead members or others that are of the class of people in quesion to feel demeaned or degraded as them feeling that they are being made fun of or ridiiculed for being of that class of people in question?
If you, or someone you know, could be interested in more of what I think, I would appreciate your email.

You are starting to get the idea.

On a mental health site, perhaps you can find jokes that don't hurt the feelings of an entire class of people.

That's how I feel about your jokes.

You can't be too cognitively impaired, because apparently you understand this joke.

As of now, I'm worried that I might understand it soon, but I have this little window of bliss (or what passes for it).

Now I do, and it didn't help.

i dont write or steal jokes about , disabled. race, death ,although i have plenty ,you see things dont enter my head that way , ok people are fat an thin, it seem,s a thin joke is not as bad as i fat one,a comedian in england , chubby brown is fat, an enters the stage to cry,s of you fat bastard .i my self was abused by my gandson an told to loose weight i nearly pi**sed laughing.im sure people can be offended an i apologise ,// nothing faze,s me// When engulfed by mental illness. it is the only thing that hurts me an my famaily.not jokes , verbal abuse ,plate,s in my anckles from motor bike smash, phyisical illness mends ,or leaves a different pain,/triggers are a way of life for us/ and normal metally unafected people,// when you get a window in mental illness seize it with both hands, because it wont be long before its calling again, life is bad for us mentally damaged ,lets not dwell on triggers , lets face them head on

I had not expected that you would reconsider your position on "fat lady" jokes. I am humbled by your humility. I'm not sure that I would have been as mature to post an apology. I really did try to look at your side of the issue. I came up ambivalent. The joke was not intended to hurt anyone, I know.

The rest is a bit of a rant that really has nothing to do with you as a person. You have a good heart. It is just a general set of feelings and observations.

My personal stake in this issue regarding objectifying overweight people has less to do with my own drug-induced weight gain (which is substantial), but, rather, having been a close friend of a morbidly obese woman for over 10 years. She has weighed in excess of 300 pounds. I have had intimate knowledge of how one is affected by society's tendency to separate out and ridicule such people.

In a way, "fat people" are the last subject of societal jokes for which comics have universal immunity. However, these jokes are extremely hurtful. Imagine being Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man. People did not see him as a human being with human emotions. He was just a freak to make jokes about. He certainly ended up feeling different from every other human on the face of the earth. In particular is the "Fat Lady", without whom nothing is over until she sings. In the meantime, she cries.

I went to see an old friend. We had lived together in 1970/71. She was so sick. She'd had cancer, she was so overweight, and she just didn't look well. We sat across from each other and talked and laughed nonstop for 5 hours, mostly acerbic observations about life. It was just wonderful.

I've just gotten into the habit of skipping manic's jokes; unfortunately one still has to see the titles.
