One of my favourite voices. So distinctive.

I have many recordings of hers. She did beautiful covers of Bob Dylan's songs. Made them her own.
A true artist.

I got to see her here a couple of years ago, when she released her album of Leadbelly's music. I remember thinking - I'm witness to an icon of American music. She sent chills down my spine.

HI PC,

I'm sad to see this. Odetta greatly influenced Janis Ian who is one of my favorite artists.

I saw her about two months ago, and was knocked on my butt -- she was practically in the next area code, so I could only see a tiny figure, in a wheelchair, wearing a dress on the stage. Her voice, though! OMG! I think by that time, she was all lungs, because the power was just amazing. And she was so funny, too -- told wonderful stories, including some Leadbelly stories, as she introduced some of his songs.

I felt thankful then that I had the chance to see her, and am even more thankful now that I took advantage of that opportunity.

Truly an icon, and a legend -- and thankfully, a legend in her own time, rather than posthumously.

Thank you for posting this, PC -- I don't think I would have known, otherwise.
