Movies - has anyone seen...

Posted by TexasChic on August 15, 2008, at 23:42:36

"Apocalypto" or "Blood Diamond"? Those are the last two I've seen. I keep watching these movies that are incredible, but soooo upsetting to a sensitive person like myself. Like "Schindler's List" upsetting. I strongly recommend them both, but not if you're in a place where seeing humanity at its worst will depress you.

Hey TC,

I like movies like that but feel sorry and awful when humans brutalize another. like the latest rambo. that scene in the village when the people were getting shot and bombed, it was so hella graphic. i think the movies u mentioned were better though.

so I don't watch too much violent stuff and go for slapstick comedy types like superbad, knocked up, more recently forgetting sarah marshall. i wanna see that pineapple express movie too. stuff that pokes fun at the drama of life, relationships, day to day stuff. chk those out if u wanna laugh, and relive youthful mischief.

I do too, but I find it different when its fiction and when I know its based on real life. I like nothing better than a good ol' horror movie. The scarier and gorier the better. They are usually so removed from real life that I can just enjoy a good scare and know nobody actually got hurt.
I also like the violent movies like "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill" because, once again, I know nobody is actually getting hurt, and they're just cool to watch. I can see how either of these kinds of movies could aggravate some people's anxiety (even though they also know they aren't real), but for some reason it actually takes my mind off mine.

I like comedies too, but I have to be in the right mood. Sometimes if I'm upset, a comedy is just not enough to engage me. I do want to see "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" though!

The movies like "Blood Diamond" you know are based on truth and the atrocities that go on in this world. They make me cry, but they are still good and worth watching, if only to keep yourself informed of what actually goes on in the world. I just have to watch myself though because I seem to relive these movies over and over in my head, kind of an obsessive type thing I guess, and then I get depressed.

Now "Apocalypto" was based more on myth than fact, but it still got to me because you couldn't help but think these things MIGHT have happened. Something about the horrors they portrayed were just too real. But over all it is just a really good action movie and that's what I love about it. That poor guy just goes from one unbelievable insane encounter to the next, with no chance to even catch his breath, and the thing that keeps him going is he knows if he doesn't make it his pregnant wife and small son will die. I really highly recommend it but warn that it has some very realistic gory parts.

Tonight I'm going to watch "No Country for Old Men". I love the Coen brothers (Directors of some of my favorites, some of which are comedies: "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", "Raising Arizona", "Blood Simple", "The Man Who Wasn't There", "Fargo", "The Big Lebowski"). I believe this one is of their violent ones though.

Hey TC,

now that I've read you're take on violent movies, i realize i actually feel the same its just that I haven't watched movies back to back in such a long time i'm not a movie buff anymore. I like when u mentioned the movie Kill Bill. that Quentin Tarantino dude knows how to make action films. did u see Grindhouse? the dual movie feature w/ Planet Terror and Deathproof? You gotta see both of them. I heard good stuff about Blood diamond and will rent it one of these days. maybe u might know already but maybe you can rent movies from your local library. I can at mine and its a dollar for a week. sometimes u have to wait weeks to months because you're on the waiting list sometimes and that can take a while but chk it out. but yeah if you're already w/ netflix or blockbuster its much simpler and ezr. "No Country for Old Men I heard is good also. Let me know about that one.

talk to ya later,

*****I thought Blood Diamond was a great movie. Lately I have to be really careful what I watch - upsetting ones can leave me feeling REALLY upset. I didn't used to be as much like that.

I though DeCaprio did a superb job in Blood Diamond.

I really like the Coen Brothers. Particularly like O Brother Where Art Thou & Fargo. The 'specials' on the Fargo DVD are really very interesting!!

After watching The Big Lebowski, I wished I had counted the swear-words in it!!! I actually found it hilarious how much swearing there was!

hugs, Kath

PS - I'm just back from a week away & am trying to skim posts & still wait to find your new thread, as I'm wondering how things are on the job front, etc. xoxo K
