What is the safe thing to do?

Posted by Angela2 on August 10, 2008, at 15:47:38

OK, so I found a place near my house I want to volunteer at. They sent me an application and on part of it, it asks if I am on any medication. I am not sure if I should list the ones I am on. Would they be prejudiced about people who are on anti depressants / anti psychotics? I really don't know. I ended up writing my meds on the medical form part. But I haven't handed it in yet. If anyone knows more about this kind of stuff, please respond. thank you.

Hi Angela
If the application asks if you are on meds and what they are ,then really should say. Should anything ever happen whilst you are there and it involved you , if it came out that you were on meds that you did not diclose then there is a possibility they legaly you could become liable.
So becareful
Dave

I looked around the internet and this is what I found:

From the ADA regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations at Volume 29, Section 1630.13:

"Prohibited medical examinations and inquiries.

May an employer ask applicants about their lawful drug use?

No, if the question is likely to elicit information about disability. Employers should know that many questions about current or prior lawful drug use are likely to elicit information about a disability, and are therefore impermissible at the pre-offer stage. For example, questions like, 'What medications are you currently taking?' or 'Have you ever taken AZT?' certainly elicit information about whether an applicant has a disability.'

May an employer ask applicants about their lawful drug use if the employer is administering a test for illegal use of drugs?

Yes, if an applicant tests positive for illegal drug use. In that case, the employer may validate the test results by asking about lawful drug use or possible explanations for the positive result other than the illegal use of drugs.

Example: If an applicant tests positive for use of a controlled substance, the employer may lawfully ask questions such as, 'What medications have you taken that might have resulted in this positive test result? Are you taking this medication under a lawful prescription?'"

Wow! Thank you TC for all the info.

I am only looking to volunteer so maybe thats why it's ok to ask that.

I talked to my pdoc and she said that I could always leave it blank and ask during my interview why they need to know and if it will be kept confidential.

I'm glad I could help. For some reason I enjoy researching things on the internet. If there was a job for that, I would so be rockin it.

> I am only looking to volunteer so maybe thats why it's ok to ask that.

You know, that is probably what it is. I still don't think its cool though!

That sounds like good advice. Maybe they have a reason(???). What ever the case, how awesome is it that you are volunteering??? Why it's totally awesome! (Wow, I really sound like a valley girl tonight - oh well, I was a teenager in the 80's, what can I say). That's very admirable. I've always thought about volunteering, but to actually go through the steps to do it is really extremely impressive! You have my upmost respect!

I've always wanted to volunteer at the Humane Society, but think I would just end up wanting to take all the animals home. I've also looked into volunteering for something to do with children. Maybe once I get a job with semi normal hours I will look into that again.

Keep up the good work. YOU SO TOTALLY ROCK!!!

TC, why thank you! You rock too. So yeah I'm pretty excited to start volunteering. It's sort of my way of getting back into the world of commitments and work, etc. But I also really wanna help out.

I like looking stuff up on the internet too. I used to do it more than I do now but I still do it from time to time. yeah it'd be cool if there was a job like that.

I was born in the 80s (so rock on girl!), but my teenage years were in the 90s. So if I seem at all angsty its cuz I listened to too much everclear and watched too much of angela chase on My So Called Life! lol.
