Important information to help you + kids stay safe

I entered my location where I live and I must say I was shocked on how many CONVICTED felons there were around me. And those are just the ones that got caught. My kids wonder why they can't ride their bikes alone, well I showed them the map. They got the idea now. I hope this helps someone out there.

Hey, thank you. I checked my address and my daughter's. It's scary the sheer numbers, but good to be aware.

I remember another neighborhood I lived in a few years back...I went on the website of the county where they also did this kind of listing. There were 6 convicted child molesters and/or rapists within 4 blocks.....exactly where I used to walk all the time. I always prayed they would never offend again, and were living quiet, decent lives, but knowing the recidivism rates for some of these crimes....well, we have to be realistic.

It was a sobering thought but I know I'd rather have the information than not.

No one near us that's a relief. Maybe about five miles away there is one child molester. Thanks Love Phillipa

That's absolutely shocking. There are a dozen child molesters and 2 rapists within a few blocks from me. I wonder if that site is reputable for sure?

Another eye-opening thing is to check the crime map if your local police website has one. I wish I'd checked it before I moved here. The density of crime is way greater than anyplace else I've lived.

I can't put too much faith into that site because I checked my Texas registry (through state of Texas...not a pay site) and there are 63 child molesters in my town. I did recognize, by picture, one child molester that lives in my neighborhood. My town has no "neighborhoods" in the pure sense of the word, so this isn't a place where you just "know" that this could be a pocket of "crime".

And they left out 1000 felons...at the prison four minutes from my house. :-)

I suggest that you go to the state site and check it for child molestors. That information is free in most state. People who are convicted of anything except molestation aren't listed here for public information. It is different by state. In Oklahoma, you can look up ANYONE and get their conviction and priors.

p.s. As our cultural populations shift, we will see more molestation in certain areas

I am skeptical of something like this. It paints a black and white picture of crime that politicians just love to role around in the mud like dirty pigs. One way you get votes is to really scare people, and then offer to build more jails, hire more cops, and make the whole country one nice big happy prison. If we look at this stuff, we must do it using science, social-science, in a sociological framework. First, go and read a copy of Dr. Barry Glassners The Culture of Fear Read part of the book here:
http://www.bowlingforcolumbine.com/library/fear/index.php

Look at the glaring number of Afro-Americans who are incarcerated. Kids are having to choose between living a life of making 5 bucks an hour for the rest of their lives, while living in horrid poverty, in communities many of us could never imagine, and being offered an out if they just hang out with this certain gang. Blame your politicians for letting this all happen. Theyve got the resources; theyve got the money; theyve got the power. Youve got an election coming up soon, and possibly a chance to bring money back to the U.S. to help people instead of endlessly fueling military operations in Iraq. Your choice.

IMHO
Jay

Well I know in my state convicted felons of abuse of children are required to report where they life and work. Plus they have to live a certain distance from a school. It is for our safety of our children. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I know as a parent, I would want to know if I live close to a child predator. As you can see in the photo, some predators are females and some are the elderly. Sometimes it is easier to trust someone like that with our children, but if we know this info we wouldn't let our children play at their house, etc.
Keep in mind that these are only the convicted, there is so much more that are not caught yet. I know a lot of times the predators are the ones living with our family, but why not take precautions if have the knowledge to at least help with the risk of our children being abused?

Also, this is just one site, I have checked my state site and the national registry, and the info seems to be very simular.

While I do agree with your opinions regarding the origin of some crime in this country, I'm afraid I simply can not buy into the whole "culture of fear" theory promoted by Michael Moore et al.

I have witnessed, survived and cope daily with what I personally know is real evil in the world.

For me, it is not about someone telling me to be afraid. I observe and draw my own conclusions regarding the world around me. I think there are things to truly fear.

I also think one can understand the sociological, fiscal and environmental circumstances that would lead another to cause harm but still seek to protect oneself from it. I am willing and able to protect myself and applaud those who want to help.

Seldom

i agree with you, seldom. there are many different reasons that criminals are created and thrive. economy is one but it is only one out of dozens of reasons that causes one person to pick one road and another goes in a different direction.

a good example would be my family. five children. reared by same parents. brother and i lived in the house at the same time. treated the same. brother quit school, joined army, came back, lost jobs, started stealing, became a horrid bully, still steals, still bullies and has been married 5 times and, as if we need more, is very, very abusive.......

my sisters and i are as different as night and day from my brother. he blames in on our parents. he is 74. how do we explain his behavior? he shaped himself. politics and the economy had nothing to do with his choices.

it would be nice if we could pin all of our criminal woes on washington.......we could just go up there and mow them all down. :-)

Personally I don't think sociological factors etc are what makes child molesters. Something's very broken in their minds. Just the high rate of repeat offenses despite jail, counseling, etc makes me think it's more ingrained in their wiring than folks who do petty theft and the like.

I agree with you, Tabitha. As far as I know there isn't any program out there that "cures" pedophilia. There seems to be a huge separation between their behavior and the behavior of the "career" criminal.

Look, there was a case in Queensland. This bloke had sex with over a thousand boys, not *one* of whom complained. As a result of an investigation of a quite different matter, these offences came to light, as he had kept records. Before his trial he gassed himself. It's not going to be a popular view, but I think this is our ages' version of witchcraft.

The book (which is unlikely to be on Amazon) is
"The Man They Called a Monster".

Sig, are you saying you think children don't really mind when adults do sexual things to them?

Hi Tabitha

Maybe those boys were physically lonely?
Maybe they appreciated being given any individual attention?
It is difficult to expain it otherwise.

Then there is the fact that he was a professional rather than a family member or friend.

Our great nephew of 3 maybe explained why he didn't want to hug by saying 'I only like smooth hugs', pointing to his skin by way of comparison. That's the way I would expect it to be.

Maybe our parents, having been throught the depression and the war, looked at the world of the fifties and said to themselves 'This is as safe as it gets' and so just thought their kids needed to toughen up? This could mean various things, one of which was, back then, not much personal touch.

Each generation makes its own mistakes, I guess.
