We had a Earthquake in the Midwest last night

Posted by rskontos on April 18, 2008, at 18:00:50

Yep and it measure 5.4 on the scale of earthquakes, Ritcher or however you spell it. And then an aftershock of 4.2. Weird huh, in Indiana to have such a thing.

I didn't know anything about it until I heard it on the radio.

I have never heard of an earthquake in the midwest until now. Does global warming effect earthquakes?

Yes it was, the house shook according to my son who woke up but I slept through it. My husband woke up afterwards. I mean I could have just be under rumble. What a sound sleeper I am I guess.

Only son was aware of the shaking but no nothing broke. So far no damage to the house I have found.

No Poet my husband who has a degree in Geology says there is a fault that runs through Memphis up and that is what has even altered the course of the Mississippi. He says this fault has the potential in the future of being a big earthquake. He told me the name of the fault but I forget. Memphis Tennessee is close to the center of the fault. NOt exact but close to it.

Hi rsk,

Yikes, a fault line that has the potential of being a big earthquake is scary. I guess tornados aren't the only thing to worry about.

Over the last 3-4 weeks there has been a significantly large increase in the amount of earthquakes world wide. The UK had one of a similar size back in late Feb, which isn't normal for them either. The massive fault line off the west US coast has been going crazy out to sea of Oregon and Alaska. Loads of quakes are popping up in unexpected places, and most major fault lines around the world have been very active lately. Thankfully there hasn't been any signifiant damage or tsumani's. The scientists usually say it's a precursor to the big one along a major fault line, lets just hope that all these smaller ones are just releasing some pressure around the world so nobody, anywhere cops a big one.

I'm just doing some positive thinking, I'm glad no one was hurt. Even though I live in Australia, where we have no major fault lines anywhere near us, we still get a few small ones where I live. It's a freaky feeling, I wouldn't like to be in a big one.

Hmmmmmmm...... It is a Waxing Moon period, so there may be bunches of quakes around us... Seems to be a connection... I am wary each month at this time... Almost 20 years since Loma Prieta hit just 15 miles from me... 5:05 pm and I was at work with a phone literally in each ear... I hear the guy in my right ear say, "What the........" and both lines went dead and immediately tremedous jolts felt through my feet, then everything went into slow motion... 20 minutes later we all gathered around a TV showing the fallen section of the Bay Bridge and see that guy in the Yugo drive right off the edge of the broken section... Wheeeeeeeee!!! He wasn't hurt or killed, just embarrassed I guess...

It was felt in Toronto and region, too. I was asleep, also, so it passed unnoticed by me.

> I have never heard of an earthquake in the midwest until now.

The fault is called the New Madrid fault. There was a very large earthquake in 1812, which some believe to be the strongest ever in the continental U.S., probably Richter 8.0 or so. It so rearranged the landscape that lakes were created, the Mississippi changed course in a number of places, and temporarily reversed flow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Earthquake

No.

Yes Lar, that is exactly what my husband told me but of course my foggy brain could not recall it exactly and I did not want to misquote him. The New Madrid Fault. And he told me about the the large earthquake and the redirection of flow and the Mississippi. I got that right at least. But could not recall everything. But then I asked the question if this at least released pressure and he says it is too hard to predict if that is it. Yikes I quit asking questions. I decided ignorance might be bliss. And since I did not wake, I would just not ever know if something happened.

I noticed you called it a fault correctly not a fault line like others--I understand from my geologist husband that the correct term is just fault. I wonder where the phrase fault line ever came from if it isn't entirely correct from a geologist standpoint, do you know? I think I asked him years ago after the earthquake in San Francisco, but I don't remember what he said. Can you see an ongoing memory problem here? Anyway, I find it interesting. Earthquakes are interesting even if scary.

Hi Larry,

Pretty obvious I was a liberal arts major and definitely skipped geology in favor of Hollywood Musicals. Thanks for your info. and the link.
