Why are some people mosquito magnets?

Posted by gardenergirl on August 6, 2007, at 15:19:00

I'm one. I go outside with the dog for five minutes and come back in with two or three bites. Forget it if I'm out for more than 20 minutes. My husband, on the other hand, seldom gets bit, and of course hardly itches if he does.

Why me? Do I smell funny? Is it my fair skin attracting bugs like a beacon? (seriously, you have to wear shades to cut the glare when looking at me if my legs are bare) ;) I read something about carbon dioxide attracting mosquitoes. Do I exhale more often or more CO2? What's the deal? It's seriously annoying.

I'm in the same boat, and also glaringly white - never thought about that having anything to do with it. I also have this weird thing where very few perfumes smell good on me. They always get really strong and sweet after a while. I've found a few that don't and just stick with them. I've often wondered if I have some sort of weird chemistry that attracts mosquitoes and makes perfumes stink.

Apparently, according to some research reported on in the NYTimes (which is why I *know* it's true)-- it's a scientific fact that some people are mosquito magnets.

The researchers hadn't narrowed it down to any particular characteristic-- but ( I hate to tell you) so far, it seems that mosquitos are very attracted to the odor of smelly socks-- or other odors like that.

Ahem. So I'm not sure where that leaves us mosquito magnets. ahem.

Honore gee thanks as all bugs love me and bite me while I sleep. And the tic, the spiders, and mosquitos and knats. I was thinking it was the body lotion I use? Love Phillipa I'm thinking it's cause we're sweet.

just consider that horrid smell when you open your b-vitamins bottle, then they go into your blood stream.

Haven't read the other replies, but I read once that if you take Vitamin B complex (includes all the B vitamins) you're not as likely to attract bugs. Also read that eating bananas can attract them.

Have found that if I do NOT scratch the bites, they'll go away pretty quickly.
