What is this email scam?

Posted by Racer on July 31, 2007, at 16:28:56

OK, so I have a half dozen email accounts, and it's really only one that has a ton of this particular spam/scam thing. The others get other spam.

This one uses online e-card places -- "A classmate has sent you an e-card!" or "A family member has sent you a postcard!" etc. Does anyone know what these are about? Is it just a phishing trip for email addresses? Or something else?

Anyone know? Anyone else getting these?

I get something like that at one account where it tells me a "sister" is inviting me to join something. It's an un-sisterly place so I know it's not the real thing, but I haven't even bothered to check with the real sister.
But I've been getting lots of CONGRATULATIONS!!! lately. YOU HAVE WON!
Uh huh. Yep.
And what is it with that poor man in Nigeria, anyway? When I worked in an office, he sent me letters wanting my bank account number. Now he's become high tech and sends me emails wanting the same information. This one has been going on for at least 20 years.

This one seems to surge and recess like so many other underhanded trends. I haven't gotten as many of the kind you describe in recent years as previously, but I did just get one about two weeks ago.

Indulging myself in being too lazy to verify at the moment, I've always thought that if you go to the included link, something nasty will be downloaded onto you; or it would ask for personal information to "prove you are the intended recipient" (how upright of them) in order to proceed.

Of course the spammer already has the email addy, and while doing something active like visiting the link (or even opening their email period) can confirm most conveniently for them that it's still a good addy, just the fact that it didn't bounce back to them as undeliverable tells them it's good. But from what I understand, they hate to take the time to check it out that way. They're busy and important people you know!

Amazing (and sickening) what goes on out there these days on this still-wild frontier!!

"something nasty will be downloaded onto you"

I gotta love this phrase. It just jumped out at me from the middle of your post. What a perfect way to describe what could potentially happen! Sounds creepy and unwelcome just reading the phrase, never mind the actual event!

I like your style :)

...such as:

"Amazing pen7is enlargement!!! really works!!"

uhhhh...sorry....can't enlarge what you don't have, but I do have a question....why do all spammer's have a number in the middle of their penises? (I wanted to type "penii" for the plural....I really did ;-)) Sure hope it's only online to get the word through spam filters, because having a number there IRL could pose some problems, methinks....

"Dating site for kinky people"

'scuse me? Beg your pardon? Why, you don't even know me, mr/ms spammer!!!

and my all time favorite.....

"find a F**K buddy tonight!!"

Gee, lemme think, finding a sexual partner (especially one described with such a lovely phrase) from a spam email.....? That's ok - I think I'll pass.

sorry, Racer, I'm on some kind of weird roll tonight....do forgive me

yeah, me, too, although less lately. Maybe next they'll tell me I've won kinky people's dating, or a free pen5is enlargement, or even a real, live F-buddy! Won't that be grand?! (see my post above)

> And what is it with that poor man in Nigeria, anyway?

pour guy. maybe instead of your money, he needs one of the three things they keep offering me! ;-)

...MY money, MY money..??? Oh my, this guy must trust me more than you! You see, he's going to give me HIS money! Sorry but I guess you didn't get as lucky as me -- he picked ME to stash his millions away in my bank account, until he can escape the political repression in his country!

I'm sorry you had to find out about the missed opportunity this way. Maybe I'll buy you a lear jet as a consolation prize! Oh and Bob, I'll make a huge contribution to Babble as soon as the money comes through. ;o)

P.S., thanks for the compliment on my style 10der! :-)

I think they put the 5 or 7 in pen5is so that scanners don't reject it.

I was told recently (by IT at work) that there's a new 'real' virus similar to this going around. Here is a link to 'Snopes' about it (its a site that does nothing but investigate these types of things). I trust Snopes, its been around forever. I check it whenever I suspect an urban legend or hoax.

Hi Racer,

One of my email addresses has been getting four of those a day for the last four weeks. Evidentially my classmates, friends, relatives and various other entities have an urgent need to send me a greeting. Pity I have an urgent need to delete the spam wihtout opening it so I don't download the virus.

Today it got four messages from people we don't know with attachments. Geez, how stupid do spammers/virus spreaders think we are? Besides I'm too busy sending money to that poor guy in Nigeria.

Strangers continue to worry about my sex life

Really, I'm beginning to feel sorry for these spamming-folk. In the last 30 minutes I've received two emails with subject lines *promising* they can 'get me laid tonight.'

I just don't know what I've done to get perfect strangers so worked up [bad joke intended] about the frequency/timing, or lack thereof, of my sexual activity.

Poor dears...I'd do better if I could, so they could stop worrying and expending all their energy working to 'get me laid,' but alas, there is a serious lack of a loving partner in my life.

It must be so frustrating to them that I prefer to wait for that circumstance.

No offense intended toward any sexual email spammers reading here....it's just you should know I'm a lost cause for your 'invitations'.....;-)
