phenomenon - dropping + breaking dishes

Posted by Fivefires on July 15, 2007, at 5:29:42

I never drop and break things.

I could have said this a month and a half ago.

Now, I drop and break an eating utensil at least once a week.

There has been at least one plate, a matching cup, a couple of glasses, a carafe, and now another cup tonight.

This is strange. Is it about dexterity? Could I be, becoming clumsy?(?)

Some of these are dishes my father gave me, so their sentimental value is very high.

Any1 have a thing like this happen to them?

Is 'the dropsies' a real phenomenon?

It always happens in the same place, just as I turn the corner around my bedroom toward the kitchen when I'm taking something back into the kitchen.

Except, the coffee carafe, I just hit it against the side of the counter. I wish my countertops were black. They're greyish marble looking and don't stand out well so that I see the edges and corners. I have a tile floor.

I've cleaned up shattered glass every week or twice a week last month or so. I cry when it's things my Dad bought for me.

I'm getting cabin fever in the A/C as above 100deg out there.

Maybe I'm just tired and trying to do too much at one time.

Good ole melamine; but can u nuke it? Don't think so. Not sure.

NO! I broke one of my ex's melamine plates that way, and his mother did, too. No melamine in the nuker...

I don't know what causes this sort of thing, but I know that I've been having trouble lately with falling over. Not falling all the way down, and there's no dizziness involved -- I just suddenly start going over to the side, windmilling my arms, etc. So far, I've managed to stay more or less upright, so I haven't gotten hurt, but it's still scary. In my case, it does seem to have coincided with a change in meds, so I'm going to talk to the doctor about it.

So, is there any chance that this started after a change of any sort? Med change? Psychosocial stressor? Space alien abduction? Anything?

Otherwise, maybe a weird anxiety reaction. That's the sort of thing that can happen to me with some sorts of anxiety...

Hi 5F,

I am clumsy and have broken so many wine glasses that I buy the cheapest ones possible. Next will be plastic. I also have broken antique candle sticks while dusting them. They just fall out of my hand or I knock them off the shelf.

I was born a clutz, I have no explanation as to why you have unwillingly joined the club, but maybe you could use rubber matts in the sink or on the counter in case you drop something or put it down too hard? Just a thought.

I, like u, think it is something more than just clumsiness. Maybe I am not holding my arms up as high or something ... no med change ... have had a lot of fear lately. This is goofy. I've never been scared to live alone. But, in the past few wks, in the middle of the night I'll awaken and get chilly and listen for things and get 'truly scared'. I'm not liking it at all. I can't be doing this.

I started the Cymbalta and then stopped it when company came.

Nothing else different.

Might have been abducted.

Or, there may be a ghost here that is getting in my way.

Last night I said 'okay if there is anyone here in my home who is dead, go away to where you belong and leave me alone'. Yeah I really did. I wasn't nasty about it. I was real 'strong soundin' ya know' but scared sh*tless!

Then I wondered if my Dad might be trying to tell me something as most of the dishes have been the ones he gave me.

Yes, high anxiety, and still a good bit of depression. I'm moving towards possibly giving a small dose of Seroquel a try, IF my Pdoc w/ prescribe Metformin or the other one we've been talking about. Not sacrificing my body for happiness!(?) (I know. Blunt and cold. I have a lot of feelings about this issue. Won't get into them here.)

Let me know about this leaning R.

ps: Will keep u and Phillipa updated as to future breakings.(?) This isn't really funny but I'm laughing. Yeah .. didn't sleep well last night w/ talking to the ghosts or spirits or whatever you call them.

Yeah the tile floor makes for a hard hit ... things really shatter over a 5x6ft area! It's really becoming a chore.

I think the people that use those rubber mats in their sinks had mothers that used rubber mats in their sinks, and mine didn't, so I've never used them. I don't know how. Which way do they go? ROFLLLLLL ... No, seriously, tks, I might get some, as this thing could get worse.

Where is the part of your brain that tells your hands where to put the four or five things you're carrying to different places? Maybe I had a little 'short out' up there, and burnt the brain fuse.

I also have this problem, but its nothing new. I have three sets of wine glasses with one having been broken out of each, I've broken 3 favorite candle holders, many dishes, glasses and an assortment of other things just that I can recall in the last few years. AND I have a whole jewelry box of single earring because I always lose one! Okay, I know that's not the same thing, but it goes along with me never being able to keep a complete set of things. Oh, and I absolutely cannot keep a watch or sunglasses. I always lose them - I'm without both right now.
