Lady's Slippers anyone?

Posted by Kath on June 13, 2007, at 16:39:49

Got back Saturday from a week on the Bruce Penninsula (Ontario, Canada)

Apparently there are numerous types of wild orchids in that area & we saw hundreds of yellow Lady's Slippers. It was AMAZING.

They were just growing wild along the edges of the roads & along the Bruce Trail paths. It was truly unbelieveable.

We go up each year, but have never been there this early & had NO idea these lovely flowers are so abundant. I took lots of photos but have to figure out about putting them on a link.

What do you think is the easiest way to do this?

I notice that some people have a link & when you click on it the photos are right there.

Of course I have to download them from my camera.

I can't do *any* of that, but people use photobucket, whatever that is.

(I need to learn how to use a digital camera before I become more cognitavely impaired and amotivated. But I so rarely look photogenic, I can so rarely find the camera, I would have to persuade someone to show me how to use it, the thought is so fleeting and so easily gone, and so on.)

We have been to the Bruce just once, but it is considered world-renowned for orchids. The yellow lady-slippers come first, in mid June, along with the ram's-heads, and the calypsos (on Flower Pot Island) Those are both so rare and beautiful. Did you see them? Then in July, the wonderful pink and white showy ladyslippers bloom all through the woods. Such a wonderful place.

You're quite right.

Really, it is absolooooooootly no big deal with me.

Nor the photo, nor anything else.

It's just friends talking, as far as I'm concerned.

I love orchids.

Nope, we only saw the yellow Lady Slippers. We've only been there in August & didn't evern see any orchids until this year.

Have you hiked the Bruce Trail at all?

Wierd how the East side of the penninsula is SOOOOOO different from the West. I LOVE the huge cliffs.

Last year we really enjoyed seeing "Greig's Caves" - the caves where the movie "Quest for Fire (about 20 years ago) was made!!

The Bruce Trail Association recently purchased quite a section of land from the Greig's Caves family. A good portion of it is shoreline, so there's now access at that point to the shore. It's lovely.

PS - Twinleaf - not sure if this a new name after the hacking thing happened? If so, have you said who you were?

Can't remember if so, if it was a personal safety issue. Sorry if so.

:-) Kath

PS - are you in Ontario? I'm about an hour north of Toronto.

No, I live further south than you, but I really love Canada (have been to Newfoundland, Laborador, etc., and also went to McGill). We went to the Bruce with an American group called the Audobon Naturalist Society, and so concentrated on flowers and birds. We did a lot of walking, but I don't know if it was on the Bruce Trail or not- I didn't know there was such a thing! Lucky you living so near such a beautiful place!

I don't have any privacy issues, other than not wanting to use my real name, but after the hack I wasn't able to use my previous posting name, which was Pfinstegg- thus the new name.

Thanks for your info!

Yes, I AM fortunate to be near such beautiful areas.

I'm really looking forward to my camping at Killbear Prov Park.

Having all the actual camping stuff - tent; screen house; stove; tarp, etc ALREADY is totally unheard of for me. It feels great! So I think I'll be ready to leave Thursday.

How nice that you went on that trip. If you went on trails they were probably parts of the Bruce Trail, which goes from Niagara Falls (Lake Ontario) right up to Tobermory, on Georgian Bay.

hugs to ya, Kath

Have a great time! I don't know where Killbear is, but, if you want to see the Calypso orchids, it's the right time of year for them to be in bloom. We took a boat from Tobermory to Flower Pot Island, and they were near the landing along the trail. The Ram's head ladyslipper, which grows mostly north of the Bruce in the Great Northern Territories, will be blooming also in various northern parts of the Bruce right now. In a number of years of orchid and flower-hunting, I've seen the Calypso only there and at the northern tip of Newfoundland (it does grow in the Canadian rockies, too), and I've never seen the Ram's-head anywhere else. It sounds like you enjoy photography- we just love photographing these wonderful orchids. I bet you would, too!

I would LOVE to see a Calypso - saw the picture in a book.

I'll be on the opposite side of Georgian Bay.

Stand at Tobermory or Flower Pot Island & look WAY East & a bit south. I usually see the tail-end of pink lady slippers at Killbear. Sort of dried - still can see the colour; still exciting, but not in their prime at all.

Oh, OK. My geography is a little vague, but I do remember Georgian Bay being to the east, now that you remind me. It looked beautiful- have fun! Maybe you'll find a Calypso there, as it's blooming season, and I think they are scattered all through the more northern parts of Canada.
