Do any of you believe in ghosts?

Posted by jo.uk on February 19, 2007, at 11:42:04

My daughter (she's 14) has often said she can see spirits. I dont poo - poo this, but I dont really know what to say to her. My mum told her that if they scare her then she should recite the Lords prayer to protect herself!

She has vivid dreams of a man with long dark hair who wanders along the lane which is runs all the way down our boundary. It's part of an old roman road. She has often talked about someone who stands at the top of the hill in our field, not far from the house. Last time she said she saw him I had trouble getting the horses in - they wouldnt come near the gate, which is where she said she saw him. Wierd. She also has visits from our dead dog Paddy. She says he comes in her room.

Have any of you experienced any of this kind of thing??
Jo

Jo two nights ago my deceased pup Brandy I dreamed he was on his leash with me and bringing me with him and then I woke but I wanted to go. Was it him telling me it's time to leave? Love Phillipa

You think so he was the one I cried into his fur each night when my Son was in Desert Storm. No one ever loved me like he did. I miss him so much. I had Sheeba at the same time. But she wasn't Brandy . Of course that makes me feel guilty not feeling the same about them but I loved her too. She's in an urn too. Now I have Teddy and Chloe and love them but they are not my first dog Brandy either. I wish I had a pic of him to post. He was white l0lbs and looked like a Maltese. Love Phillipa

Hi Jo,

I absolutely believe in ghosts: I have seen both human and animal forms. Last week my mother told me she was doing laundry and a ghost cat walked through. She knew which one it was, he's been dead for over 20 years. She wasn't scared, I wasn't scared when I saw ghost cats or even the human. With the human it was more *huh, did I see that?*

One should try and find the most rational, reasonable and logical explanation for these things. Most "ghost sightings" take place at night because these sightings are often simply illusions created by darkness and artificial light. Sometimes there may actually be some form of hallucination involved. I for one have a problem with hypnopompic hallucinations (waking up at night sensing an evil presense, often times seeing snakes hanging from the ceiling, sometimes seeing human figures staring at me, etc.). It can be truly scary, but it is a well-researched phenomenon and there is nothing supernatural about it.

Yes, there may indeed be ghosts, but I have never seen one, nor have I encountered any convincing proof of their existence.

He sounds cute, wish I could see a picture. I know how you feel. After my Paddy died I was standing in the bathroom brushing my hair and I heard the tic-tic of paws coming towards me across the lino.Without looking down I said "hi Spender"(thats Paddys brother who's still with me). I looked down but there wasnt a dog there. Spender was till curled up asleep in his bed.
Paddy is buried in my garden.

You wasnt scared at all Poet? My daughter says there are people in her room sometimes. My Mum stays in the rooms above our garage when she visits, and she recently said that there was a grey haired man, short and chubby sitting on her bed. She said he seemed really sad. She wasnt scared particularly, but she decided to busy herself outside for a while (!) and when she got back he was gone.
This guy sounds much like the previous owner of ou house, who had died a few days before he 'appeared' to my Mum.
I've never seen an actual ghost myself.

Phew your hallucinations sound terrifying, at least you can apply a rational explanation to them Klavot.
I do agree, you should look for a logical explanation first. But not all things can easily be explained away.
The things my daughter thinks she has seen have been in broad daylight.

Hi Jo,

I honestly wasn't scared when I saw the human form. She looked like my great aunt only my great aunt was still alive at that time. It wasn't a premonition of my great aunt's death, either, as she died at least 20 years later.

I have never seen a ghost, but I'm not too quick to say they don't exist.

The things your daughter is seeing may or may not be ghosts, but I think what is important is how she feels about them and what she thinks they are.

I'll be interested in how this turns out.

I do believe it can happen.

I've heard a radio program on it once.

I had a couple of scarey experiences as a teenager, and one a few years ago, driving by a building about 15 minutes away that is 'known' to be 'haunted'.

Who's to say there isn't a scientific explanation for 'ghosts' that we just aren't advanced enough to understand yet? I believe in keeping an open mind about all things. Just think about the things people thought were ludicrous 100 years ago that are common knowledge now. Why make a absolute decision about something that cannot be proved or disproved?

I have definately experienced a few extremely weird phenomena that I can't come up with a rational explanaition for, even 20 years later. I can't discount the idea altogether as a result, though it defies "common sense".

i've "heard" and read many stories about people messing wiht the wrong thing, and causes bad things to happpen, for intince, Ouija board.

I do belive that spirits can influence some thought process in very mentally people. Well, like if some actually has a spirit inside then which is defintly documented in African tribes with all that voodoo stuff, no wonder...

And no trying to justify the movie "The Exorcist"
Anyone?

Yeah my Mum used to do the ouija board many years ago. She said it was fun, asking questions and messing around. Then, one day her friend asked the board the immortal question ' is any body there' and this time the glass flew across the room and smashed in to the wall.
Scared my mum silly, she's never done it since.

My inexplicable experiences were tied to innocently thinking ouiji board was a game, back in college. It didn't really turn out to be such a good game- visible static rolling around the telephone in the middle of a sunny afternoon, that kind of thing. I can't explaiin that or much else about it, but No thanks!

It is also possible that garden gnomes and tooth fairies might exist. After all, we can't conclusively disprove their existence, right? However, it is irrational, pointless and potentially dangerous to believe in their existence without any sort of convincing evidence.

I'd like to believe in ghosts.

The world would be a much more interesting place with some around.

There can't be any.
(All those people who came before.)

Maybe the were ghosts once?
We are becoming more amnesic and disconnected from the past.

Anything from more than 20 years ago is up for reformulation.
