Mindless Drivel Question...forks..wanna vote?

Posted by Kath on January 24, 2007, at 15:33:57

OK - in my 'silverware' set there are 2 kinds of forks.

There's the kind with long 'tines' where the fork part is more rectangular shape.

And there's the kind with shorter 'tines' that is more a square shape.

I am a short-fork person. I think they're dessert forks, but I prefer to use them for everything.

Care to vote, anyone?

I recently sorted out the cutlery....just the forks and spoons, actually. The knives defeated me because there are 2 sorts, those steak knives with black handles and the rest.

I was concerned that the handles didn't match and various other things.

But on the fork front, I'm with you, Kath, I like my tines shorter.

What do you think of runcible spoons?

Hi

what in the heck are runcibel spoons????

I have another cutlery confession.

I'm a veggie, and alot of our meals are casseroles or various mixtures of foods. I almost always use a large spoon (the shape of a tea spoon, but bigger) & prefer that to a fork.

Oh yes, and a dishware confession also.....I almost never use a flat dinner plate. I like the 'pasta dishes' we have - sort of low-sided large flattish bowls.

:-) Did I mention that I was feeling bored/real-life avoidant today?

;-) Kath

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

They are a small spoon and fork combination (a terror to obsessives) that defy easy categorisation.

I never use the "dessert" fork. Not even for dessert. It's not heavy enough for me, if that makes any sense. Oddly enough, given that, it kind of seems strange that I don't like to use a larger/soup/tablespoon for anything. I much prefer a teaspoon even when I'm eating soup.

Speaking of sporks...

No doubt I, too, was bored when I posted that. ;)

You don't think the spork is the hallmark of a civilised society?

What an interesting thread.

Short tines, definately. And I eat ice cream, pudding, etc. with a baby spoon. :-)

Short tines don't like heavy forks. Love Phillipa

Hi, Declan.

Unfortunately, I'll have to refrain from answering your question until I have a chance to formulate an answer regarding what you might call a "civilized society", which will not earn me my first PBC. ;)

Short fork, I think they're for dessert and salads, but I eat everything with them. Note, not the really short tines with the long handle for seafood, my flatware set has those, too. I use them to get pickles and olives out of jars.

can they see the viewpoint of the other? can they respect the passionate feelings on both sides, for and against?

stay tuned......

= ) just pleasantly amused by the resurfacing of the spork thread and those who love them and those who have the opposite of love....

we like both of youse All Done and Declan......regardless of whether one abhors sporks or thinks they're the hallmark of an evolved society.

I'd use small forks & big spoons & you'd use big forks & small spoons!

Well, I use to use spoons for everything. Big spoons were only for cold cereal, and small spoons for everything else. BUT, I ran out of silverwear very very fast. So, I moved onto forks. Even my Big forks aren't all that big, so I tend to use them more often, but the small forks for icecream and yogert (dont' ask it's a new thing).

But, at home, we have real metal sporks (or as my parents call them splades) and they are ideal for everything!!!!! If I could find some here, I would snatch them up in a hurry.
