I can't study and I'm eating all day

Posted by Deneb on October 14, 2006, at 23:59:50

I have a test on Mon. It's worth 20%. I haven't studied. I can't study. I get anxious when I start thinking about studying because I don't have enough time to study.

All I've been doing today is eat and stare at the computer. I went shopping for more food.

I can't study. I dunno what to do. I think I'll skip the test. :-(

I'm just getting more and more anxious.

I can't handle the test. I just can't handle it.

I'm hopeless.

I can't help you at all. Today I have stared at the wall and read one short story. That's what 3 double whiskies (last night) does to me. What to do? The thing that is worrying you is the thing that gives you something to worry about. I dunno if that is just fatuous or what.

No you're not Deneb. Don't skip the test. You're bound to get more on it if you write it and don't study than if you just skip it. It's not like you can get negitive grades. Won't that be horrible if you could? I swear, I would be so screwed.

Actually I've been doing the same thing all day. But I have finals next week. Try breaking your studying down into smaller chunks with little rewards inbetween. I find that helps. Or study in the morning and go out in the afternoon. Don't just study. That makes it so hard and so unrewarding.

Good luck!

Yes. I have a seminar that I have to give in around one months time. I need to write the darned thing and get a draft to my supervisor pronto.

I haven't done much in the way of writing it. I'm finding it hard to write it because when I sit down to write it I get anxious about how little I've done and about how I don't really have time to do a good job of it.

But...

Every little bit helps. Every little bit.

Instead of worring about what you haven't done and what you don't have time to do (which I am just great at worrying about) see if you can focus on the idea that every little bit that you do is likely to help you more.

If you skip the test you will get... O%?
If you don't study at all between now and the test you will get... You will scrape a pass? Maybe get a B? You have done that before...
If you study as best you can tomorrow...
You could bring your grade up 5% or 10% or whatever...
Could mean the difference between a pass and a fail...
Or a scrape through and a reasonable mark...
Or a reasonable mark and a great mark...

But if you skip the test you will get...

Nothing.

Hang in there, Deneb.

I'd better get back to it myself...

Deneb,

Even one hour of studying is better than no hours. And taking the test will certainly give you a higher grade than the zero you will get if you don't take it. I suspect you already know that, but need to figure out how to get started.

If you're at the stage where you feel you don't have time and don't know where to start, then you need to strategize and get very task-oriented.

Some options:
Pick a topic you feel weak on or didn't finish an assignment for and devote one hour to studying it. Then take a 15 minute break. Then do another.

If it is a math or science class, start to systematcially look over your problem sets or try some extra problems from the text book.

Does the instructor have old tests on reserve in teh library for practice? If so, try one. Then take a break.

Do you have a classmate you can call to meet with for a little while and quiz each other?

Try to dream up a question for the test and then answer it. Take a break. Do another.

Even if you do poorly on this test, you still have the other 80% to do well on. Good luck.

Deneb you always put it off the studying and pull an A. I think you're a crammer. What do you think? Love Phillipa
