Why does crying dry out my eyes?

Posted by Racer on July 16, 2006, at 10:01:46

That just seems so counterintuitive, doesn't it? Why is it that it happens?

This struck me as more Social than Health, by the way, because it seems like one of those questions like, "If you wash your hair with shampoo, what's real poo?" I know it's more serious a question, but it still seemed much less a health question.

If anyone thinks I'm wrong, though, it's redirectable...

It seems to dehydrate my whole body when I have the crying emotional enemas complete with the snuffles. It doesn't seem right.

You're in my thoughts. I'm picking up things are rough for you.....(bright, ain't I? Smile)

I'm so sorry, dear.

Racer, what's set you on this immediate unhappiness?

Did anything happen other than your realization in the Marriage counselling session?

Cause I think your 98% was terrific!

And I don't wanna hear anything different. Don't care if it was a community college. Don't care if you never did anything else.

And you know what, I'm gonna get all sanctimonious--

are you possibly not letting yourself enjoy this accomplishement????????? Taking it away from yourself???????

Cause I do that all the time to myself---- and from reading your posts, I've felt that we have a lot in common.

What do you want from yourself? You did great! You're where you are-- you doing really well where you are, and you're working on your math-- lucky you! -- and well, I think you're doing a lot.

Funny how we can put on a mask as all I've been doing for the last two nights is cry. I feel I've ruined eveyones life and I'll never get better and I'm old. Racer I give you credit for pushing and pushing. I just can't do it anymore all the faking and trying to divert my sadness. I'm a horrible person. You'e a great one. So I guess this means I'm more depressed. All of a sudden all my losses hit me. My dogs that dies. Why am I so sensitive. Racer you're a strong person. I admire you. Love Phillipa

Phillipa: You are anything but horrible -- you are always offering support and a smile to others. I admire your ability to give that way. Also, having your dog die is a major thing. Devastating. Sometimes others, who haven't gone through that, don't "get it". But it ripped my heart out to lose mine. I'm sorry you are so down right now.

Racer: You know how after you cry for a long time it feels as though you've run a marathon. Your entire body, and heart are exhausted. Maybe our tear ducts are the same -- they get tired and need a break. Sometimes I wonder if that's natures way of making sure that we don't cry forever.

Your sadness is so evident lately. I don't know what to say, except that I hope relief is coming.

hugs, EL

Salt buildup? It dries out the rest of my face, so maybe the eyes as well.

I hope you feel better soon. (Am I remembering the correct person in thinking you may be on hormones?)

Not anymore.

That's probably part of it, too...

Elaine does that explain why I'm been totally exhausted the last two days? And I lost two dogs and one cat. The favorite puppy and cat within a month. The other pup ll months later. And the guilt I feel for not being able to save them. Even though Brandy was l7 ans Sheeba l2 with a heart condition I should have been able to save them. And the poor cat they hated cats at the beach cause so many are feral. They said the cat had Aids. They lied as I saw our old vet and he said they don't put them down. So I feel guilty for not stopping them. Guilt is a terrible thing. Love phillipa Thanks for your kind words.

When did you stop the hormones?

I didn't know that you had decided to do that. If it was recently, it could affect your mood. Also the reason for stopping could be affecting you.

Probably the literal answer to your question is that your tear ducts have to produce more tears, which are constantly lubricating your eyes, and it takes some time to do that.

I'm really sorry you're so sad about something. You had seemed to be feeling a little better recently.

Has somethingthing happened? I mean other than in your internal experience, or the moment that you were talking about in counselling?. Because it's very sad to undergo such a change, and it might help to pinpoint it.

Estrogen withdrawal definitely makes me cry and I get accompanying headaches. I try to keep it from happening.

That's why when you go through menopause everthing literally dries up. But not the tears. Love Phillipa

Yep. I drint lots of water ... really. My body doesn't make it's own estrogen anymore, so I can control the estrogen levels by estradiol injections.

I don't know if I'm better off now (had TAH-BSO) or when I made my own. Think prob' now.

I was over a week late getting my injection about 3-4 days ago, getting very sad and reclusive, but then I realized it was the estrogen withdrawal and ran and got my shot. Now feel a lot better.

Really it made you feel better. I need to find an OB-GYN who checks hormones. I know mine are very low. Love Phillipa
