How do I get shiny soft gorgeous hair?

Posted by Deneb on July 6, 2006, at 22:58:23

I want my hair to look like those people on hair colour commercials. LOL

Are there any products out there that can give me soft shiny hair?

I've found salon shampoos to make a HUGE difference in the texture of my hair. I like Redken or Nexxus, but I'm sure there's many other good ones.

Its also good to use as little heat as possible on your hair. Limit your use of: hot water, blow dryer, curling irons, hot rollers, hairspray. All this dries out your hair. I try to only use hot rollers and hairspray for going out rather than everyday.

There are also products to give your hair extra shine like Frizz Ease, or any of a number of salon brands of shiny hair product.

Do you have a hairdresser? Someone in the know can recommend the best products for your hair. Don't let them talk you into a ton of expensive stuff though. Tell them you're on a budget and would like to know what would be the best, most economical thing to spend your money on for shiny hair.

There are beauty supply stores that have specials, which is the time to stock up. You can get salon shampoo for the same price as store brands if you buy by the liter. There's a place called Ulta that I go to that has specials like that twice a year.

Even if you don't get it on special though, they are usually way more concentrated than store brand shampoos and conditioners, so its more economical than it seems. I usually add water to my shampoo to thin it out some so I won't use too much.

You also have to work with the type of hair you have, and accept that you have certain limits. For instance, mine is very thick, so I will never get that wispy look. Its just not going to happen. I have to keep that in mind when I'm looking at new hairstyles.

I would imagine a lot of that perfect hair on TV is just camera and lighting effects.

So don't be dissappointed if your hair doesn't glare in people's eyes like a diamond blinding them *ouch, my eyes!* after you use a certain product. =D

I don't have a hairdresser. I usually either cut my own hair, have my Mom do it, or walk in someplace to get it cut. I don't know any good hairdressers. It's hit and miss for me. Right now I'm letting my hair grow long.

I'm going to check out some salon products. I think they have better ingredients.

Michael, darn, you mean I'm *not* guaranteed to have super shiny hair like those models if I use their products? ;-)

My hair is very course and thick. When I do a messy bun, the end strands stick up and out, they don't drape down softly. My Mom has super straight shiny hair but I don't have the super straight shiny Asian hair. Mine is thick and has a lot of volume.

I sometimes use a shine spray with hemp oil in it. There are various brands, usually salon. I can't remember what I currently have. I bet it would be great on your hair. My hair is reasonably thick, but fine, so lots of products weigh it down.

The other things I'd recommend: good nutrition (pre-natal vitamins have been doing wonderful things for my hair, skin, and nails for years now!), good hair habits such as not brushing it or putting it up in a bun when it's wet, deep conditioning once a week, and getting regular cuts to keep split ends down. If you do a final rinse in cold water, that can help. Similarly, when blowing it dry, use the coolest setting to finish.

~from what i've been told by *hair people*, taking the time and learning skill to care and work on your hair makes a lot of difference! i use NO heat, etc. and my hair is really in good condition, however i don't really do anything to it and it looks 'okay' but let a pro do it and i can't believe it's MY hair!!! i do know that the right shampoo for your hair type really makes a difference. also, taking a daily vitamin and drinking lots of water helps w/ shine!!

see if you can find some sites that give tips =)

It's a silicon based product that you put on your hair when it is wet. It help to protect the hair from damage AND makes it really shiny.

Worked like a charm for me.

I found a great conditioner that is less expensive than the salon products, more shine, use less, brand name SHIKAI, Color Reflect. Sold at the VitaminShoppe. It's sold by them online too. A great product. Love Phillipa

Hemp oil....hmmmm...is it lighter than most oils? I'm going to look for that from now on. Thanks for the tip.

I just started taking a multivitamin. My doctor said I have low iron, so I figured maybe I'm low on other minerals and vitamins. I think it would take a long time before the vitamins make a difference...a lot of hair to grow.

Thanks wildcard, I don't remember my hair being shiny.

I use all sorts of shampoos. Right now I'm using L'Oréal Kids. It smells really good and no tears!

I don't know what will work for you, but 3 things made my hair shinier:

1. quitting smoking
2. Drinking lots of water
3. Daily conditioning.

I'm sure better nutrition has helped too. I use salon shampoo (Biolage color care) and i buy the matching conditioner when i can afford to.

I thought of buying salon shampoo, since they contain less harsh surfactants like sodium laurenth sulfate instead of ammonium lauryl sulfate, but we already have tons of shampoo in the house and I didn't want to buy more shampoo.

I bought a Citre Shine shine mister and it really works! I'm also trying out rinsing my hair with cold water after I'm done shampooing. That supposedly seals up the cuticle or something, making hair shinier.
