Plastic Surgery

Posted by Adrift on June 25, 2006, at 19:11:26

I am in the process of considering it, what do you think of plastic surgery and would you ever do it? I am not getting a warm resonse from those around me, how would you deal with people who tell you that you are crazy? Although, the more important question is, how do I know Im not crazy!

You need to ask Phillipa about her experiences with it. She has talked about it here before.

That last part is a good question: how do you know if you really are nuts? I don't know the answer to that, but I can help with some questions that might help you figure it out.

First, and most importantly, what *exactly* do you expect the surgery to do? For instance, if you wanted, say, breast augmentation, are you looking for an improved appearance? Or for more popularity? While plastic surgery can improve self-image, which can in turn improve social functioning, the surgery itself won't make any difference in your life, beyond appearance.

None of which is true if you're talking about a functional problem. Breast reduction is more often functional than cosmetic, and certain other plastic surgeries can be considered functional, as well.

As far as strictly cosmetic surgeries go, though, I think answering that first question is going to go a long way towards answering your question, of whether or not you're crazy to want this.

I hope that helps. (And I do understand and empathize with the impulse...)

I use prescription ointment for my acne. it costs about $150 per tube. (Thank goodness for health insurance). It's a completely cosmetic thing. I just don't like having sores on my face. It was actually the dermatologist who recommended it to me when I went in for a mole check-up. I'm not sure that there's a lot of difference sometimes, between that and having surgery. I smear ointment on my face because I hate facing the world with sores and scabs and scars on my face. I feel more confident when I'm having a good skin day. (not today though!)

Whatever you're considering might bother you in a similar way. But plastic surgery is usually major, and changes your body in permanent ways (ointment's not so permanent). Also there can be a lot of physical pain and recovery time. I think it's a big decision, and you should really figure out what's motivating you to have the surgery. I have nothing against the surgery. I think sometimes the surgery is fixing something on the inside, though, rather than the outside. There may be less risky ways of changing the inside, like psychotherapy, self-help, exercise, relationship counselling, and taking medicine, for example.

Again -- NO experience with plastic surgery, and I've never given serious thought to it. I'm glad you're soliciting different opinions. It's good to have information when making decisions like this!

best wishes,
-ll

I have only a whiff of experience with the subject of cosmetic work. No, I’ve not had plastic surgery but I did have major cosmetic dental work done about a year ago. Wanted it for over 25 years. Had no reason other than it was a major nagging self image problem for as long as I can remember. Pricey as it was, I have not regretted a day having it done. I’m thrilled beyond expectations. Yes, I got the strange responses, but…. It was the right thing for me to do and I know in the depths of my soul I did it for the right reasons.

Yup Midnight Blue is correct I had plastic surgery a year ago and have regretted it ever since. I thought it would take ten years off my life that's what the media tells you. Well I got a facelift and all I got were complications, drain tube in my neck for over a month, swelling of my neck had to drained every day for a week. Drain tube left in and every time I chewed fluid spurted out. They cut my parotid gland. And the doc was supposed to raise my eybows to get rid of a scowl that makes me always look angry he didn't do it. I wanted it to gain the ten years I've lost from depression and what I got was more depression. Oh some people get great results there are no guarantees. Babblemail me I have pictures I can E-mail you. Love Phillipa

More info. If it's a tummy tuck first you need lipo, then time to heal then the actual cut and a corset tight around the abdominal area for weeks 24/7 and you can't stand up straight for I forget how long. And I'm not fat but the doc said that the lipo alone would look like a wrinkled abdomen. Then there is just lipo you have to wear a suit on your body for weeks my ex's wife had this done. Over her whole body. Breast reduction is another thing if it interfers with your back and a nose job too if it is really disfigured or trouble breathing. There are so many others. But check the credentials ask people if they know people who have had the proceedure done and how was the doc. Remember this is out of pocket no insurance. Check the state board for complaints. Oh I had it done to get back into the work place as unfortunately looks do matter. And I now have scars on my face which he said he would fix. No thank you you're not touching me again. Google Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. They had a website last year in Greenville NC. I should have gone to Raleigh or waited till I got here. This is triggering for me and it's time for bed . Good night pleasant dreams. Love Phillipa

Hi Adrift,

I think it depends on the extent of the plastic surgery you're considering.

Michael Jackson makeover=crazy
Nip & tuck= not so crazy
*liposuction=not so crazy
nose job=not so crazy

*if I had the money I'd have liposuction done. I know what the risks and physical pain involved are. I know that I have a distoted body image, too, and that it would not magically make me love myself. I think it would be one less thing I intensely hate about myself if I could reduce the size of my hips and thighs.

Poet exactly how I felt and I did know the stuff that was involved but just like meds everyones body reacts differentely and there are always complications even if they are rare. I would get two opinions and they take before and after shots first. And show you pictures in a book of their work. Remember there are no miracles thats only the airbrushing of the movie stars you see in magazines. Love Phillipa and good luck adrift with what you decide to do.

Thank you everyone for your responses! They really helped. What I want done is not for functional purposes, I am doing it to feel better about myself, which I think is ok. It would not be changing my appearance. I want lipo on one area of my body, but people are so opinionated about it. It turns into, what is wrong with me, what a crazy idea! There is nothing wrong with me, I just hate my love handles peeping over my jeans and maybe if highrise jeans were in fashion I would never have come up with this, but they aren't, so I am obsessed. Truthfully, I am sure I would be obsessed even if we only wore dresses. You all have made me feel so much better about just having the thoughts, which btw are incredibly mentally consuming. Thank you Phillipa for the offer on the pictures. I may take you up on it. Im sorry yourr surgery didn't turn out as you hoped. That is what I fear, because there are a lot of things that can go wrong.
