Help..HURT KITTY, need advice ;o(

Posted by wildcardII on May 26, 2006, at 9:03:13

~i feed all the outside kitties around here and one came to me w/ a hurt leg. i 1st thought it was broken but it isn't. it looks to have been caught in something or possibly bitten. i've had him on my back porch for weeks now w/ food/water and litter box. he is soooo sweet. i wear gloves b/c i am very pregnant and put peroxide and neosporin on his wound everyday. for the pain, ibuprofen. i know it's not recommended but it helped his pain tremendously! lately i've noticed it's looking worse and found he has been aggravating it so i wrapped it in gauze and med. tape. i cannot afford a vet rt. now and he doesn't seem to be suffering much. any advice?? i figured if this doesn't work then he'll have to be put down...

If you know the right sort of veterinarian, you can get some antibiotics really inexpensively.

A vet at an animal rescue place. You know the vibe I mean. I hope there's one near you.

Yeah, a lot of vet's around here treat feral animals for free, or for greatly reduced fees. Call ALL of them, and call your local humane society. Explain that while you're not in a position to pay for a feral animal, you do want this guy patched up. See what happens.

As for his injury, cats are notoriously prone to infections like that, and it will get worse. It's possible there's still a foreign body in there, too, which would aggravate it; or that there's bone involvement. Cats abcess like mad, with a lot of injuries, and that can be devastating. There's not much you can do at home to treat him, without antibiotics.

Good luck, and do call the vets and ask. Worst they can do is say no, and then you keep calling, since that's not a vet you'd want to see anyway...

Right on. And you'll have to find out if there's some kind of foreign object in there. I nearly lost one kitty who had a piece of a claw in his *ss. He went septic almost overnight.

Keep us informed, okay?

A vet appointment isn't that expensive to see if there's a foreign body in the leg and you can't see it only a vet will be able to. Love Phillipa
