massages and tipping

Posted by bottomfeeder on May 10, 2006, at 11:33:29

I am going to have my very first massage soon. YEA ME!!! I hear it is heavenly and am looking forward to it for the most part....except the uncomfortable stripping down and letting someone touch me part of course. But if it is indeed as wonderful as I've been told, I can deal with that. I was wondering about tipping though. I plan to give a tip (unless it is horrible or something). I think the massage costs like $65. Would a $10 be about right for that? And do you pay it to whomever collects the fee at the end (or beginning)? Do you tell them you are adding X amount for the tip? Just wondering....tipping is a bit awkward for me since I usually don't go places where I need to leave a tip. Oh and if anyone cares to share about their massage experience that would be great too!

never had one but tell all about it ;-) (nm) » bottomfeeder

I went weekly for a year or two since it was there own practice no tip. And they drape you with sheets and only expose the area they are massaging. And no private area. Love Phillipa

I get regular massages, usually about every four weeks, although I think I must be weeks late. Time to call!

I pay with a credit card, and I ask them to add a tip. I usually tip $9 or $10 on a $60-65 charge. I've been seeing the same LMT for two years, and she is excellent! I left cash in the room once when I had a massage on vacation.

About massages: you can leave on what clothing you feel you need to be comfortable, but the more you have on, the harder it is for the LMT to do their work. I've always felt very respected and protected when I've had a massage. When it's time to turn over, the therapist should hold the sheet/blanket up to screen you while you flip. And don't be afraid to tell them if something doesn't feel good. Or if you want more or less pressure, etc.

Enjoy!

Hi bottomfeeder,

My husband is a massage therapist. $10 for a $65 massage is a good tip. Depending on where he's working, clients either pay him/tip him directly or they pay at the desk after the massage. When they do that, they tell the desk person that $10 is a tip for him and they put it aside.

Ironically I hate to be touched, so I've never had a massage. Go ahead and laugh. Husband assures me they are relaxing and if I'd let my guard down for two seconds I'd probably say it feels good. He has many regular clients so I know people really like to have massages done on them.

Post how your massage was.

You'll feel like the cat who ate all the cream. But be prepared to be pretty worthless the rest of the day. Ten bucks sounds like a great tip. Enjoy!

I've only ever done it once I think in Spain. This person kept hanging around; I had no idea why. And then there was an incident in Prague, a horrible business. I don't know how to do it. It must be hell for people with social phobia. I'm really glad we don't have it here.

That was nice.....

Well I did it. It was great....oh so relaxing. I felt like I would just melt to the floor. I just wanted to go to sleep. Definitely something I would recommend to all my fellow babblers! And hopefully I will have the opportunity to do it again sometime...soon! Thanks all.

I wish I was in Mexico again. They are so courteous and welcoming. They really appreciate your patronage. When we stopped to eat in Cheyenne on the return home, the waitress at the truckstop diner practically threw our placemats and silverware on the table!
