Here's a more obscure song from them that I love:
Calling Occupants.Still remember where I was when I heard she had died. There hasn't been another voice like hers. Probably won't be either. I really miss their music.

I would sing many of the Carpenters songs to my son when I was pregnant with him. I even used to place the earphones on my tummy!

It was complications from anorexia, actually heart failure. If I remember correctly, someone in a review called her "chunky" or something, and that was her trigger.

Karen Carpenter had one of the richest voices I've ever heard. Her voice had such depth, it was palpable. I could make it into a blanket, fashion it into a cocoon, and never leave.

She was a natural. Her brother was a great producer
and she was the first female drummer that I ever laid eyes on.
I thought it was one of the saddest losses in music...still do.

It is my understanding that she died from heart failure, caused by years of aneorexia. Very sad :-(

Karen Carpenter's death scared me. Even though I knew, intellectually, that death from anorexia was a possibility, I never *knew* that people died from it. It's still a tough one for me to get my mind around.
Hey, did you ever hear the Sonics' version of "Superstar?" Suddenly changes the connotations. Great version, though.

I seem to remember that they were announced as Channelling the Beatles, or being Beatles in Disguise, Some times it was the Beach Boys being channelled. I liked the mysteriousness of the sound and group.Imagine my surprise to hear the dulcet tones of Karen and Richard singing of their songs, Fantastic!!

Ever hear "Lick the Tins"'s rendition of "I can't Help Falling in Love with You?. It was used at the end of "Some Kind of Wonderful". Not a great movie, has it's moments, great ending, great song - beautiful punk rendtion of the Elvis hit.

Thanks for that! I'm going to have to check that band out. I really like some of the Canadian bands I've been listening to lately... Arrogant Worms and Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie.

I just heard Klaatu's Calling Occupants. I really enjoyed it, and in hearing it, I have to say that I am even more impressed with the Carpenters... not that they did it better, but that they so well kept the feel and integrity of the original in their version. It's one thing to take another's song and make it your own, but quite another to take someone else's song, play it well, make it your own, but NOT CHANGE IT.
