heck no... I just stayed away, and that is a wonderful idea
Every once in a while I think I can be objective and impartial regarding matters of faith, and respect all the opinions of others as their inherent rights....sounds good right?
I think of course I can respect the views of others and not take it as a personal attack against me or a limitation of my freedom, but emotionally I can't handle it, it's not rational at all
It's really over the top...I wish I could express how much. A jehovah's witness left a brochure at my door the other day about the devil or something, and that was it! I was so agitated. And it was just a brochure..it really doesn't take much at all. When it happens it takes me a while to calm myself down again.

Too much catholic school Phillipa, too much, and everything that went with it...
thanks for reading

I by no means want to diminish the valuable place that faith has in the lives of so many people. I believe that is a very personal and sacred thing, and I would never devalue anyone's beliefs.

The lack of open-mindedness regarding religion has caused more suffering than anything I can think of. The evening news gives us daily reminders.

I am almost sure I do.

And have you ever seen me post on the faith board?

I don't even lurk there.

I understand the trigger, I do.
although some may wonder how someone can be triggered by talk of religion.
)
I got an e-mail once from an acquaintance, someone had given her my e-mail.
And she sent me a forwarded "Keep America White.. we believe in *one* god here, if you don't like it, you have rights, you have the right to leave"
and more shite that does not deserve repeating.

(yeah like that's ALWAYS the way it's been.. and btw if Jesus suddenly appeared to you in the literal way he's been depicted he'd be from the middle east and not speaking english.. ahem..you'd probably not go to him on "principle" if he was a Doctor. But I think he'd just be so darn pleased with that e-mail, sounds just like something he'd do.
(sarcasm)
Anyway..
I was so triggered, I was actually surprised at how intensely (I can never remember how to spell intensely)upset I was, I was shaking, I couldn't sleep..

Oh dear, I hope I didn't just trigger you.
If it helps she got a very calm, but very factual and detailed response.
As did everyone on her global list..accidentally of course ; )

Anyway.
Yeah, I can't even really talk about how I feel about catholicism and it's history, even to someone who's feelings are similar to mine.
I just get too ... everything.

I get triggered - in terms of tense generally p*ssedoffness illicited in me - by the med board nowofdays. Actually, it's been that way for a while and I seem irrationally drawn to it. Which, in turn, also causes me to get ticked at my own self. I need a rubber band on my wrist to "pop" for aversion therapy. Think that would work?

I am pretty sure understand how you feel and I feel for you.

Our founders had the wisdom to separate religion and government in the US. Otherwise we might be in a civil war now.

To be fair, there really are religious people out there who respect the rights of others to have their own beliefs. They're just usually not the ones that draw the most attention. You know, like on the news it seems like all we ever hear is bad stuff happening, but its because it gets more viewers than good news? For instance, a couple of years ago it seemed like shark attacks were on the rise and everyone wanted to know what was going on. But in reality, there wasn't any more attacks than previous years, it just seemed that way because the media had focused on it.

I hope that made sense, I'm getting sleepy.

There's a huge amount of religious tolerance in this area. There is a synagogue and a catholic church who are side by side somewhere in the area, and they're always in the paper for something truly generous one has done for the other. My minister had something to do (forgive me for not remembering the particulars) in the bris of a conservative rabbi's son. Ecumenicalism (is that a word) is everywhere.

Several churches are sharing quarters right now with congregations of completely different religions or denominations.

It doesn't have to be an adversarial thing.

That sounds so similar to all my brothers~the younger ones being forced into Catholic schools and to this day 'they' cannot get into the religion issue w/o becoming extremely upset.

I was happy to get these responses because I often feel badly about how I react to this issue.
It seems my personal reactions sometimes get in the way of a very strong intention not to disrespect anyone's beliefs in any way.

I do really believe that it's all about my own personal experience in a very religious (albeit hypocritical and shame filled) environment
The evidence for this: I am less triggered by discussions of faith/spirituality to which I have had very little exposure, that is religions/spirituality I have never been made to participate in. I am therefore able to really appreciate them because of the emotional distance I am afforded.
I suppose I also react to whatever message the particular believe system communicates to me about "who I am" or how "wrong" I am, which resonates with some very old and powerful messages. It's sort of like a global? reaction to more specific and less related information (it need only have the connotation I guess, for the trigger to occur and all that energy to come back to life)
crazy stuff people....crazy

Hello Wildcard.

with no feet. : )

It's really sad how much hurt seems to go along with what should be so beautiful.

I remember something Dinah said, that I thought was brilliant.

She said she thought the commandment "thou shalt not take the name of God in vain"
didn't refer to swearing, but to what has been done to others in the name of God.

I want to basically repeat what SleepyGirl said
too.
I think spirituality is a beautiful thing.

And whether I believe that Jesus was real, or symbolic doesn't matter (To me) I love the man he was. He was the coolest

Can't take credit for it. It's Dr. Laura that I heard it from, and she may have got it elsewhere.

But I remembered it and used it properly in context. :)

I'm glad someone can listen to Dr. Laura and pick out jewels like that.
She does have them, but I can't take the rest of her long enough to pick them out.

I used to listen to her all the time.

My other favorite (which I know is not original to her) is "Trust, but tie up the camel."

Which is admittedly not as profound (nm)
