Random Act of Kindness

Posted by Berberis on January 26, 2006, at 13:27:24

I was sitting in a local restaurant today after having finished eating my lunch. I was feeling depressed and was staring at nothing – just sitting and staring. A man walked up to me, put his hand on my lunch tray, and asked “are you done with this?”. I thought what’s going on here? He's obviously not an employee of the restaurant and besides employees don’t bus the tables – it’s a buffet joint. I said to him, “yes I’m done but I can take care of that myself”. He deposited my trash in the garbage and stacked the tray with the others left by previous diners. I thanked him for his kindness and left. I just didn’t know what to make of this. It wasn’t like he wanted my table because the place was empty. Also I think he came in with another guy and they were sitting at another table. For some reason, it really affected me and I cried walking back to the office. A simple kindness by a perfect stranger.

You brought back a memory from 15 years ago that i will never forget. I was walking to the apartment i shared w/ some people (i was 14), and i was walking w/ my head down just sad for many reasons. I always payed attention cutting through that alley b/c it was dangerous and all of a sudden a middle aged man appeared from nowhere and asked me if i was okay. He looked homeless but i smiled and nodded keeping my guard up. He smiled at me w/ a twinkle in his eyes and said these words,"Don't you ever walk with your head down again, you are much to beautiful inside and out to hide that from the world", then he was gone....i have never forgotten him...That day i learned a lot from a stranger.

About 2 years ago my friend and I were at 7/11, about to pay for our slurpees, and the only other lady in the store paid for them. We didn't know her, and didn't really know what she was doing at the time. My friend and I were so stuned but neither of us has forgotten it.

These are the sort of things I like to think about when the news is full of atrocities that make you question the fate of humanity. These strangers aren't the type that look for recognition or publicity, so its up to us not to forget them.

I was in the grocery store a few days ago. I was selecting a dozen eggs to buy. Unfortunately you have to check each box before buying because quite often there are broken eggs in most boxes.
A wee older woman was beside me, looking at the cold cases. "Where are the brown eggs?" she asked, rheumy eyes squinting at the boxes arrayed before us.

Oh, these are the well-behaved brown ones, I said, pointing her toward the "open yard, fed with organic feed" expensive eggs. She had her hand full with a few other items, and she was obviously hampered by her arthritic fingers, not nimble enough to deal with the buttons and edges on the foam packaging.

So I opened one for her. "Nope," I said, finding several eggs glued to their packaging," Let's look for another box." Two searches later and we had a complete box of a dozen eggs, ready for a home.

"You are a treasure, "she said to me, "just a treasure."

I only hope that I find the same assistance when I go shopping without the independence that I take for granted at the moment.
