Rust

Posted by Toph on December 2, 2005, at 9:29:07

It's only 25 degrees and it seems like 25 below, my knees hurt when I squat, my wife and I look at each other and silently say, "maybe later" all too often, I say phrases like, "it was much better back then" with increasing frequency, I have extra skin as if I lost a lot of weight but I still weigh the same, I have difficulty retrieving words I know from my memory, my job is interesting but somehow harder, I've abandoned as futile cutting the grey hairs out of my moustache, I've become convinced that scientists are creating new more virulent viruses all the time, I don't always recognize myself in the mirror, I find it increasingly difficult to identify with the characters on popular television shows, I think about retirement a lot even though it's more than a decade away...

Yesterday I yelled at some kids who were harmlessly playing on my yard.

What's happening to me?

It's called.....age

LOL, LOL

Hey, I am 59, but I feel 20, and act it too (people guess my age at 17 years younger than I am....brag, brag, LOl, LOL),

BUT

I believe that ATTITUDE is everything, and I have a real SASSY attitude, LOL

I work at a university, where it looks like the 1960's all over again (clothing-wise), except for the students that wear the word "JUICY" on their butts......ick.

I believe in more subtler forms of advertising!

I try to look on the bright side.
1) You don't need to remember most of that stuff you've forgotten anyway.
2) Being the grouchy old dude who yells "you kids, get off the grasss!" is really cool.
3) Gray hair is just free highlights.

and the kicker
4) Would you really want to be 20 again?

Actually, you had me with #1.

Although that's only comforting if I could remember how much I've forgotten.....

Uhhh....what was the question?

I realize that its all about attitude. You guys all seem so perky. I'm not always a whiner, just today. As for wearing "juicy" on my butt, I think "Danger: No Smoking" would be more appropriate these days.

Sorry, Toph, I hope I didn't hurt your feelings by laughing. I was laughing more at myself than at you - everything you describe fits me.

Getting older has its advantages ... For one, I am calmer, wiser and kinder.

As for yelling at kids, well, it's better if I don't, but sometimes the little punks are are the sidewalk screaming like banshees, or they throw garbage on the ground. They deserve having someone draw the line and if I'm there, I do it. Too many kids are out of control with no respect for themselves, their peers or the world around them. So, as an example of irrate old age, I'm afraid yelling at kids doesn't wash. We are part of a community, and so are the kids - talking to them, in kindness or to chastise, I think is part of our job as human being, as members of the world.

Last summer, there were three teenaged girls walking down the street and one of them screamed blood curdling screams a couple of times. I ran outside. There they were, cool as they could be. I said to them, if someone attacked you, would you want me to come and help, to help you defend yourself? Yes, they said. Well, if you scream like that when nothing is wrong, prettty soon I'm not going to bother to come running, so when you really need help, noone is going to come. Ahh. They might have thought I'm an old bat (hey, I 'm only 50) but maybe they heard me.

Toph, I intend to do my very best to grow old gracefully. I need more exercise though.

Thanks for the laughs with this thread.

And you know, grey hair on men is distinguished, right? But glad your humor and fun personality contradicts that. I love goofy. :)

I don't know I've ever seen it at all. What people won't do to make an individual statement that's just like all the others.
