Checking the stove, hair straightener, etc

Posted by lynn970 on October 10, 2005, at 21:26:05

Ok, I know that I have turned the coffee pot off before I left the house, but just as I sit in my car to drive off to work, I get out of the car, unlock the door and double check the coffee pot. I then proceed to my daughter's room to make sure that she has not only turned off her hair straigthener, but has also unplugged it. I then check the coffee pot again as I walk out of the house.

Is there anyone else who does things like this?

No, I have an anal retentive man who does that. Actually turns lights off when he leaves a room even if I am still in it. He also unplugs the toaster. Now I ask you, what is going to happen to that toaster when he is gone? Are the levers magically going to drop down so the fillament gets hot and then get stuck there? Cause we all know eventually the levers pop up again. Or perhaps does he think the mice might like a toast snack when we are away? (Not thinking of course that if this were a true possibility, then the little rodents could simply plug the cord back in)

I'm terribly obsessed with my hair straightners being left on.. So I bought a special heat proof mat to keep it on.. well, its more of a roll, so you wrap the straighters in it..
Plus, I now leave the house 30 minutes before my husband even gets up, so I know he would notice them.

Doesn't stop the stomach flip half way to work as I worry though!!

"Anal retentive" sent me into a fit of giggles far worse than the question of what one would call a parrot wearing a raincoat.

PS: Keep that humour going AdaGrace. It might not clean the house - but it might 'clean' you. (love me)

Always unplug it and put it away. Otherwise I'd have to wash the fingerprints off. Not that it's used very much. Fondly, Phillipa

Why is it so disturbing? I just like everything to be shiney new looking no crumbs, dirt on floor. And I'll be looking for a couselor in Charlotte. Wildcard better look out cause I E-mailed a picture taken with a digital camera of her street sign and E-mailed to her. I know where she lives. And there's a trampoline in her yard. She better watch out or I'll be jumping on it. Fondly, Phillipa

I was just funnin' ya! Does she live on Looney Ln (nm) » Phillipa

This can be a sign of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is an advanced anxiety disorder, but usually its more extreme than what you've stated. I think we all do alot of things while not thinking consiously about it. Especially in the morning. Then when you realize you can't remember for sure, you just have to go check. Have you ever gotten home and suddenly realized you don't remember the drive at all? I think its the same sort of thing. We work on auto pilot sometimes while thinking about the other million things going on in out lives.

I actually asked my doctor about this years ago and she said it was normal. I think we do alot of mundane things is this sort of mindset. If I were more psychologically knowledgable, I might be able to understand why it happens. H-m-m, maybe I'll research that.
