Then who will take care of your dog? It would be pretty cruel of you to leave him while he's recovering, wouldn't it? He's depending on your sticking around.

The fact that you posted here shows that at least a part of you isn't going for the gun idea. I agree with Teresa about the 'who would take care of your dog' thing. He/she needs you. Poor baby has been through a hard time. Try to take things one step at a time. You don't have to handle everything right this second. I hope you continue to post and let us know how you're doing. I know chatrooms can seem impersonal, but there's real people writing these things. And we genuinely care.

I love opera! It's so cool that you can sing opera - I always wished I could. I have to make do with listening to it and going to operas when I can. :)

Do you sing around the house or for friends, even if you don't do it as a pro anymore?

What was your favorite role?

Jerry,

I know what you mean about the uncertainty killing you.

I, too, suffer from a need to know that everything is going to turn out okay. I know what it feels like to not have any control over what is going on. How scary it is.

I also know that I have been through a lot. Every person that has heard the story of my life has asked how it is that I'm still alive. Still paying rent, still holding a job, still hanging onto a shred of sanity.

But I am. I work hard at it. I have learned that although it may seems that circumstances are out of my control, they really aren't. How well the move goes depends on how well you can get done what you need to do. Recouping your monetary losses depends on how much you can scrimp on little things like ordering meals instead of cooking them, et cetera.

And if you're a closet control freak like me, you can do it. BECAUSE it's a matter of control.

Just focus on everything that IS within your control and let the stuff you can't control just fall in place around what you do.

Unsupportive parents, believe it or not, we can control. Either we yell at them- make them see what we are feeling. Or we ignore them, knowing that their particular brand of "helping" is anything but helping you at the moment.

I like PlatinumBride's idea of switching back and forth from preparing for the concert and packing. It is the perfect mix of cerebral and non-cerebral activity. Doggie's needs right now will be recuperating, so by you keeping busy on your stuff, you will be allowing him to rest up, too.

Tackle one idea at a time.

You can do this.

When you need to vent, do so here; we'll listen.

Thanks for being interested.
I have trouble coming to terms with singing and sort of go in and out of lessons and practicing. Part of me still wants to sing as a pro again. (Hence, why I am a head case....well, partly)
The dream role for me was Puccini's Manon Lescaut. But I have to say that I had a beautiful relationship that blossomed repeatedly everytime I did Mimi.

Please feel free to email me at ospinawoman at hotmail dot com. I feel badly taking up more time here on this forum.

wow, thanks so much! I just didn't want to be annoying!

I guess opera appeals a lot to many of us with very strong emotions...that is how it started getting to me. But as much as it became the medicine, it, several years later, became another cause for anxiety and depression. Just think about the run-of-the-mill show biz story. Once a director said that someone had asked him how he got such a good cast and he said "Easy, I just didnt' hire anyone on prozac this year". Nice. A***hole...I was on zoloft at the time! Guess I showed him!

Hi Diane,

How interesting to hear that you're an opera singer. I'm not a singer, but I listen to a lot of opera. My favorite opera is LUCIA DI LAMERMOOR. I have the Joan Sutherland recording. Just thinking about it gives me goose-bumps, especially the mad scene. Please continue to post.

HI Sarah,

I agree! Sutherland was a phenomenon when she was singing! Is Pavarotti the tenor on that album? He is one of my faves. Some days when I need a smile, I can just play O sole mio and I feel better.
I've always loved Lucia as well....It just was never a role I was well-suited to. The opera world today is very specialized, so you have to find out what works for you, within a certain perameter, and stick to that.
Sutherland was a Dramatic Soprano - singing heavy rep, and having a not so great career. When she met and married Richard Bonynge, he helped her discover that she had, not only weight in her voice, but also loft and agility. This is what made her so great and world class. Pavarotti became super-famous, partially because he was the only tenor around who was taller than Sutherland!!! She helped to launch his career. Strange world...

Ever listen to Donizetti's Anna Bolena? Amazing stuff there too....great mad scene for Anne Boleyn.

Well, keep listening....and thanks

Diane

hi Diane,
I've never listed to Anna Bolena...I'll have to find it and see.

My favorites include Don Giovanni (of course!), L'Elisir d'Amour, Die Fledermaus, Le Nozze de Figaro, Tosca, Pagliacci. I have never much cared for Wagner's operas as a whole, although I enjoy bits and pieces of them. And I love certain arias or duets from other operas like Pearl Fishers, Martha, La Wally, and the rest of Mozart.

Who do you think are the best new 'up and coming' tenors these days? Do you have any favorites? How about sopranos/etc?

thanks!
take care,
JenStar

I'll have to listen to Lucia again!

You know, you have good taste :-)

I perfer the retired or dead singers for the most part, but Rene Flemming is a beautiful soprano - especially in Mozart. I'm not a huge Wagner fan either, unless Placido Domingo is singing it.

There is a tenor who I actually worked with in Pittsburgh, named Rolando Villazon. He opened at the Met, last year I think, with Rene Flemming in Traviata. He released his first CD last year. If you watched the PBS updated Boheme a few years ago, he was the Rodolfo. I think that he may be destined for greatness.
I think that my favorite operas and singers vary by mood...(gee, that's a surprise from a person with a mood disorder ha ha). Maybe my all-time general fave soprano is Renata Tebaldi - especially her early recordings. I love Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Callas and Caballe too... There are just too many tenors for me to mention - Franco Corelli, Domingo, Pavarotti, Bergonzi...
I keep trying to find a voice teacher, but something always gets in the way these days. It's kind of weird. Hard enough for me to muster up the courage to open my mouth and sing. Oh well....I don't know what I am going to do about this...it's a lousy business and not for the feint of heart. But, truth be told, there aer thousands of singers like me in New York...there was just never anything else we wanted to do, but it didnt' work out.

I'm not even in NYC anymore...mental breakdowns have a way of making you lose your apartment and ability to work, etc.

Care to tell me a bit about you? I always like to know what prompts a person to love an art form that is not mainstream. Do you just respond to the beauty of voice or the music or the whole thing put together?

Take care,

Diane

Jerry,

I don't know what words I can say to help you in this moment of your life. I feel for you and as I write this I can feel myself starting to cry. I know the pain you are feeling and I feel it with you.

Whenever I stare into that abyss and wonder if its worth going on I insist to myself that somehow, things will get better. Maybe not all of a sudden but they will, a little at a time. Sometimes the little is imperceptible but it is happening.

My faith in God and knowing that He is present with me in my trials gives me the strength to go on. If could handle yesterday I can handle today and then tomorrow. He gives us the strength we need when we need it. I have counted on that grace and I have never been let down by Jesus. During my darkest moments I would sit in my back yard and hold a small cricifix in my hand and imagine Jesus walking towards me and sitting beside me. It was comforting to me and still is. He is real.

As I continue my journey I have come to understand that recovery isn't a straight line. There are ups and downs and sometimes the down periods can seem to last forever. The improtant thing to keep reminding yourself of is that the up times WILL come back. Hold onto that hope and your faith and you will see tomorrow and beyond.

May God Bless you Jerry and hold you as you journey through your life.

David

I have no ideas about IT or tech.....not entirely true...I know that universities are sometimes a good place to start...or law firms! Both because they pay less than in the real world.

Are you in NYC? If so, we should exchange an email about IT.

As for Arts Admin, yeah , that's tough...Have you done the internship thing? Someone I know built her resume that way and then got jobs that were better and better.

I titally understand about the audition....sometimes you just cannot do it!!!

Please keep in touch.....
