I have a question. How do you get someone to stop drinking if they have been doing so for four long years? I really need help on this one.

This isnt the answer you are probably looking for but they have to want it themselves. when they want it then they can get help but until then its almost impossible for another person to do anything except be there as a support. You could look into treatment centers etc. would this person be willing to get professional help? Its very difficult.
Im sorry you are struggling with this

You can still get help and support, even if your friend won't. There is an offshoot of AA just for friends/relatives to get support; dealing with an alcoholic is hard. I'm sorry I can't remember what they call it. Your local AA could tell you.

Hey coachdee,
You might find some people with good thoughts over on substance. I think rain was right though, people have to admit there's a problem and then want to be helped. Hope you find some answers.

I know it hurts to have someone u care about self-destructing and u feel helpless. I def. recommend Al-Anon for support and understanding of the disease. If u get a chance, read my post An Effective Solvent above. It says so much in so few.
