Depression

What is happening when a depressed person is no longer able to understand what other people are saying to them? Why does this happen?

I think it's a form of cognitive disfunction. Sometimes it can be related to medication - have you recently started a new med, or increased something?
It is really unnerving; I hope it passes for you soon.
For me, it feels like being in a foreign film without any subtitles.

Only on hydroxyzine for anxiety. Anxiety is controlled but depression is worsening.

Perfect analogy. It makes it damn difficult to be at work, especially when the boss is talking.

I'd say if it doesn't resolve itself in say, a week or two? - talk to your doctor. And I hope you don't get lost while driving to work like I did!

Clear Skies, You must be joking. At least I hope you are. If traffic is so confusing there I'd never make it. And Sonya worrying creates all kinds of distraction in your mind. This could explain why you are not doing as well as you'd like at work. Fondly, Phillipa

I think it is an internal shutdown. You no longer want to understand life/life's happening's so your mind won't let you..

I think that's part of it. When I'm being spoken to, I feel as though I'm trying hard to comprehend but the words don't make any sense. Maybe as Phillipa suggested also, there's a worry component (I'm scared/worried I won't understand, so the worry overwhelms to the point that I CAN'T understand). *sigh*

No, I really did get lost, driving in a straight line - disoriented is more accurate, I guess. I overshot my turn off for work and ended up 2 towns north of where I should have been. Scary!

It lasted a few bewildering days and it turned out I was on too many medications (titrating down off of one and ramping up on another). It was too much for my wee brain to handle.

Sonya, I am not sure why this happens except maybe it is a cognitive malfunction. Or you need more serotonin or some other neurotransmitter. I'm thinking of you.
