Dog toys

Posted by Dinah on August 7, 2005, at 21:45:47

Anyone got any recommendations for little dogs? I used to get them rawhide sticks, but they've scared me off that with reports of choking and preservatives. I don't let them have anything with squeakers. Harry loved ropies, (floss ropes with knots?), but the young ones don't seem interested.

I don't know why I'm so worried about safety when their current favorites are legos and wood blocks, and small plastic star wars action figures. I have my son do periodic dog bed sweeps for his toys. But still I am.

I let my bigger youngster have the chlorophyl chews, but their lower weight limit is well above my littlest ones who are both under five pounds I think.

We have toy here called a Kong. They come in different sizes, are ultra-tuff rubber and you can put food inside them too. Sarah's other favourite was Mr Bones a tuff squeaky toy. Apart form the Kong it's the only thing she didn't destroy within a couple of hours.

I'm trying to picture my two ultradainty maltese playing with a toy called Kong. :) But they have them in small sizes? I'll have to look for that.

I wish I had pictures of them to put up, but it's unbelievably hard to take good pictures of them. I keep coming out with nothing but white blobs. Still, I suppose most maltese look alike unless your their mommy. Even my husband and son are just now telling one from the other, when clearly they don't look a thing alike! (grin)

Yeah they've got them in all sizes. I've got an English Pointer who's a big cuddly sook and has a bigger vocabulary than I do.

Dinah, my dog LOVES a yellow squeaky toy by Hartz Brand. It's indestructible and small. It looks like a cross between a yellow ice-cream cone and a SpongeBob Square Pants -- it has a cone shaped base and a porcupiney top, but it's all made of soft rubber.

My little dog chews and destroys all new toys in MINUTES, but we've had this yellow beast for half a year and he has yet to make a dent. And best of all, it cost only about $4! I found it at Walgreens in the smallish dog section.

I think I might buy a few more and save them up just in case this one eventually breaks.

I also find that my dog loooooves empty plastic water bottles or soda bottles. he loves to chew off the caps. Every time we finish a bottle, I give it to him to chew. He chews it into bits but never eats them, and I don't mind picking up the debris when he's done. It's so enjoyable for him!

Good luck! :) Small dogs are such fun.

My dog loves Kongs and nylabones. She destroys nylabones eventually, but they do last awhile. She's such a chewer of toys that we have to get really hard ones.

I've tried to introduce her to "playing" with plush toys, but she wants to eat them, too.
