I've found that the sound of a cat ... uh ... "unswallowing" something on the carpet wakes me faster than a bucket of ice water poured over me...
(Hope you're OK...)

Racer, what a wonderful way to put it! Cat unswallowing wakes me up fast, too!
Also, stepping in the "unswallow" with a bare foot on the way to the bathroom....well, that too is quite an eye-opener. :)
Bobby, I hope you're OK and not burnt up in tender areas!

She makes this dreadful clicking noise a few times before she "unswallows" the hair ball and her most recently eaten cat food. It's a gorgeous sound (not really, it's horrible!)

I believe my cat is trying to hack up a ball o' hair, but nothing every comes out. Anything I could do for the poor little thing?

I think they just need time...if she keeps hacking, a trip to the vet might be in order. But hopefully she'll get it on her own! :)
The funny thing about my cats is that they don't ever hack up hairballs. I think they instinctively TRY to, but all that comes out is...you guessed it...partially digested and carpet-dying food. The food is formulated ot help digest hairballs...but maybe their little bodies and tummies don't "know" that and try to hack up hairballs anyway?
Hmmmmm.

Put a little vegetable oil on her nose, (she'll get all miffed) but she'll lick it off, and it helps.
