I'd love to live in San Francisco or Seattle, but because of the difference in home prices here and there, that would be nearly impossible.
Well, where I'd really like to live is northern Wales or Western Scotland or maybe Cornwall. Wales probably, somewhere near Beddgelert.
Realistically, if I ever had to move, it would be to Huntsville Alabama, or Asheville NC.

I'm not sure. I guess I need to have a look round first and see what I like. Short term I'd be much happier in Auckland or even Wellington (2 and 4 hours away respectively). But rent prices there...
I dunno. I'm still looking at different countries. Half the year in Aus and half in the US sounds good to me. Follow summer around...
We'll see. Don't know where in the US. I think I like cities - but seeing as there are more people in Sydney than the whole of NZ and all, I'm not sure whether I really would...
I'd like to visit England. But I'm not so sure about the weather / hours of darkness in winter.
Bit unsure about going somewhere where they don't like speaking English.

If I could live anywhere, I know what the area would look like -- even though I don't know where it is.
There are areas around Seattle that I love, the islands to the west, where there are small towns only an hour from the city. Something like that. I want some space to breathe, with space for a garden, animals, etc.
Otherwise, there are some areas around Melbourne that I would LOVE to live. In fact, there are areas all over Victoria that I think I could be very, very happy indeed. Sydney doesn't appeal so much, although my husband sometimes makes sounds about wanting to go back there. (Strangely, he's never mentioned wanting to move back to Newcastle, his hometown...)
I grew up in San Francisco, but couldn't imagine living there now. There are areas to the north, though, parts of Sonoma County, that I love.
I want to be in a small town, with lots of living things around me. Oregon? Washington? Not too far from the ocean. Older house, with two stories, and hardwood floors.
Alex, would I find that in NZ?

Melborne is meant to be a really nice place to live. I've only been to the airport on the way to Tasmania.

Some places seem like summer all year round.
My husband and I actually divide the year into fall, spring, summer, h*ll, and summer. In that order. It won't be summer again until September at the earliest.

Spent all my life in Sydney but I'm not really a city person.
Thought about moving to Tassy a long time ago as it's beautiful and much more rural in feel. There are so many nice places in Oz it's hard to say. Outside of Oz I don't really know. Maybe Canada somewhere I hear Victoria in BC is beautiful.

Yeah, though also BLOODY FREEZING!!!
I've been a little put off by the thought of having to shovel snow. And the many months of cold and snow... I think NZ is supposed to be 'sub-tropical'. I like that. The difference between summer and winter being the difference between a t-shirt and a sweater.

It can get a little too hot someplaces. Everyone warned me Canberra would be hot as it isn't by a beach. It wasn't so very bad though. I managed to struggle on in jeans and a t-shirt. I'll admit I came verrrrrrrrrry close to having to move to shorts though. And I did need to have little siestas in the office for a couple hours in the 'arvo' (as they say).

If I'm remembering my geography correctly, and I'm not at all sure I do, that's the part we missed because my husband got sick in Bath and we stayed over there longer than expected so the rest of our vacation was truncated.
But... If I am remembering correctly, that may be where my mother's mother's family comes from.
I wish we had been able to see it. I'll make sure we do next time we go. Which won't be for another ten years or so. :(

I don't mind where I live now (Michigan) but I would love the weather in San Diego ... maybe the Coronado (spelling?) area. We took our kids there last year for a vacation and I seriously thought, now this is a place where I could live.

Personally I would like to live anywhere other than the UK - you folks in NZ, Oz and the US seem to have it all!! Like nice scenery, not crowded, not expensive, awesome national parks.... and house prices that are vaguely affordable!! And also nice big houses. Here in the UK its all dead expensive and for like a tiny house. Someone mentioned Bath (do you mean Bath, England?) I lived there for a year and it was very nice. I have also lived in St Andrews Scotland - nice also and I grew up in York. Nice place! Now I live in Bristol and I hate it. I guess I like small historic towns.
I would love to live somewhere like Canada or North california, or Nz.....lots of national parks and hiking and I love all those houses you see in movies with the white picket fence, and there's like so much SPACE. ah well.

PS the weather in England is pants - not very hot in the summer, not very cold in the winter, and very rainy! I like somewhere which is really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter.
Actually I wouldn't mind living in finland - my mother is finnish and lives there, and its very nice. Absolutely fantastic healthcare and uni education - all free!

For reference, we're in a 1500 square foot condo, in a high density downtown area, with similar units going for 500K US. And it's considered a "bargain"! Most of the houses in this area are over $1M at this point -- some of those houses SMALLER than our condo!
I like your idea about what would be nice, though: a bit of space, a white picket fence, and nice weather. In fact, before I complain, I'm going to go sit on our balcony and enjoy some of our weather today...

Believe us, house prices in the UK, especially the south, are STUPID expensive.. ow any first time buyer could buy is beyond me..
Our flat, as an example (admittedly we're in London, but not one of the nicer areas!) is small - one bedroom, the tiniest bathroom ever, a lounge and kitchen.. around 600sq ft is worth about £220,000.. so $400k roughly.. doesn't even have a shower in it.. no outside space what so ever.
In our planned move out of London, we will be able to buy a 2 bedroomed semi detached house with a small garden.. or 3 bedroom mid terrace..I'll send you my postcode via email and you can look us up on Google World.. that will show you how little space there is here!! And London isn't unusual, which is a shame..

but i wish my husband was here. we just got married 2 weeks ago. now he can't get into the usa until september 7. they don't have an earlier appt at the consulate to get the paperwork done :'(

Not to depress you, but you could rent that (600 square feet, 1 bedroom) for $520 a month in a good part of town (older unit) in a large city in the U.S. Nope, I won't say where! LOL

sorry i've been busy with the wedding and all, so i haven't really been keeping up like i should *blush*
wedding was on canada day, in canada of course.
i met the groom last october, he's the brother-in-law of one of my coworkers at my last canadian job.
we decided to get married a couple of months after i moved to the usa.
*spoiler: nausea inducement below*
it was really sweet actually. one of those guys who was a lone wolf (he's 32 now, never been married and never had a relationship that lasted this long). he's "giving love a chance". (competing theory: he's getting old and his joints and body are getting old and brittle, so he can't ski/jump 50ft cliffs/swing a hammer 10 hours a day/surf in 5C water every weekend/play tennis like he used to).
he was lonely, i was lonely. we went to dinners, we enjoyed each other's company. he gets me outside and teaches me sports and encourages me. i teach him about gourmet cooking and wine and books and computers.
he was here for a bit over a week in the usa after we were married and it was wonderful (all the time in the world to talk and always doing something different and doing all the little affectionate nice things when coming and sitting and going) and hard in a good way (he has anxiety and he was quitting smoking pot so there was lots of emotion).
his dad called me today and was retelling the story of how he was hit by a bus on the honeymoon (or right after?) and spent two years in and out of hospital. don't worry he says. in 20 years you'll laugh about it. but he says to "my heart breaks for you guys". it was sweet
i want to live in a house with love in it. it's nice
