you learn something new every single day..

Posted by Spriggy on June 26, 2005, at 17:43:39

Especially when you are bored apparently. ROFL

If you have not seen Napoleon Dynamite, this will make no sense to you at all.

BUT, I am astonished. I just found out that a LIGER is real. ROFL

Who knew?

thanks, gabbi and Spriggy, that was fascinating.....

But, you know, also somewhat creepy - to me. I tend to have deep, gut reactions to things that I can't necessarily explain at first, or maybe ever.

I had one to those pictures. It's sad somehow and doesn't seem okay to me.

Poor ligers and tions :-(

I found it sad too, especially the old Liger.
For me I think it's that "Naughty thumb of science"(To quote e.e cummings) I find disturbing at times. Those animals are a gift we share the earth with. To meddle with them just because we have the power, is to me, dishonouring the privilege we've been given.

yeah. you expressed that better than I could have.

Guess I was a bit afraid of offending someone who maybe works with a certain type of genetics, or creates other kinds of hybrids.....sheesh, sounds like I'm getting too hesitant to post about my own convictions these days....don't like that.

Anyway....myself ('cause it's my personal frame of reference) - I picture a tear in God's metaphorical eye seeing things such as this...we surely do find *amazing* ways to use our awesome brains and free will, don't we?

so many important issues in your post..
just picking 1..
i feel "everyone has the right to convictions"
to express..
looking down and negative about other convictions is not productive..
i would love you not to be hesitant..

ha ha, there's really a Liger? that's hilarious (nm)

No offense intended to you or your kids...I guess there's a funny aspect, though I have a really hard time finding it.... perhaps for kids (depending on age) it would just be *neat* as it's like a fantasy, something you'd imagine or draw but could never be real, and yet it is?

But overall, it seems pretty awful to me.
Totally unnatural and unnecessary.
Why do we use technology for stuff like this? It's not always alright to do things just because we can.
Sorry, this pushed some button with me I didn't know was such a sensitive one..:-(

Hi Sprig,

My daughters love Napoleon Dynamite. Cult film kind of. I watched it once, randomly funny in a teen kind of way I guess, but kinda depressing too. Glad I don't live in his world! ; )

Did you ever see Rocky Horror? Now there's a cult film!

I'm NOT Spriggy (but then...who is? ;-)) But I love it! Lost count of how many times I've seen it since I was about 16 or 17! Used to go to an old theatre near home as a teenager and throw popcorn, and all the other participatory stuff...great, silly fun.

Dam*it, Janet!

Hey 10der! You really have to see it in a theatre at some point, don't you? To get the full effect. We went when we were dating, and most of the ppl knew every line by heart, were dressed up, etc... It was an experience. I'm going to rent it for my girls, but it might just not be the same for them. Then again, maybe it will start a new cult following! Who knows. They watch over and over: 16 candles, The Breakfast Club, and A Walk to Remember, all of which I love too.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the lines from Rocky Horror anymore. It's been too long. Good reason to rent it I suppose.

My kids (and I) think it's funny because of the movie. Have you seen it???

Besides, it sounds as if no technology was involved. The cats mated. End of story. What's the big deal? It would really be no different than a mule, the product of a horse and donkey.

I really liked Nap. Dyn! How interesting that a liger really exists. But can it change its stripes??

No. Not yet. I actually forgot about that connection in this thread. But I plan to...sounds interesting and funny!

> Besides, it sounds as if no technology was involved.

Maybe I used the wrong word. Don't know what to call it when zoos "encourage" these animals to mate cross-species. These are all from captive breeding programs, the best I can understand. I figured that from the articles when they used the phrases "a _____results from breeding a _____with a _____" - didn't sound natural. And I think, usually, lions and tigers would stay clear of each other in the wild..

I was really curious, so I read some more...

"Big cats generally stick to their own so these amazing hybrids don't occur naturally in the wild. Rather they're the product of captive breeding programs. They were much more common in the latter half of the 19th century, during the heyday of traveling circuses and sideshows."

>>The cats mated. End of story. What's the big deal? It would really be no different than a mule, the product of a horse and donkey.<<

I guess because they probably (well, to a point, anyway) didn't *want* to mate. And, it doesn’t work out over time. Which kinds makes sense to me, as it’s tough to tinker with nature and keep things healthy, IMO. There’s apparently been some suffering involved, because humans were curious and wanted to experiment. The article from gabbi’s link mentioned the tion being prone to cancers, but it was this one that got to me, as it says many are "deformed and diseased."

Sorry to be so darned serious...but the more I knew, the more I didn’t like. On the other hand, I get that sometimes trying new things is the only way to find out what happens, and to discover things that will ultimately help humans and/or animals. This doesn’t seems like one of those times…

I’m still going to rent ND, though :-)

Thanks for bringing that up Tenderheart.

No, they didn't "want" to mate, actually it's quite difficult to get them to, and I shudder at what is done to them to achieve that goal. Additionally, they are far more susceptible to disease because of what has been done.
