hi, new to the board!

Posted by john berk on May 17, 2005, at 11:14:10

hello everyone
i just recently joined this group after lurking/reading the boards for quite awhile. this seems to be one of the most informative groups i have come across, and i hope to learn a great deal here, and hope i can contribute with the knowledge of mental health issues i have accumulated the last few years. i have ocd and recently recovered from major depression. i also am an avid weight-lifter and runner, and try to stay up to date on vitamins, herbs, and health related issues. i hope i can help anyone with questions on subjects related to health and fitness. thank you for allowing me to join, and i really look forward to being part of this excellent group! peace...john berk

Welcome John,

Nice to have you here. Sadly the only weight I'm lifting of late is the increasing amount located around my waist line. I used to be an avid runner too, but my knees aren't what they used to be and so I'm in the process of evaluating treadmills and elipticals since street running is pretty much out.

Everyone here is really kind and supportive so don't be shy, just jump in on any thread that takes your interest. Hope to see more from you soon.

Damos

hi john - how did you overcome your depression? do you deal only with depression or do you have anxiety issues as well, like ocd or any phobias?

we've heard a lot about what herbs and supplements you should take to help defeat depression, like fish oil and B vitamins to name a few, but what have you found to work best? are you taking any meds now?

welcome to the board and congrats on beating depression!

thanks so much for the nice welcome from everyone, i feel at home already!! i should clarify that i have managed to beat my major depression, but still have on-going minor depression, [dysthmia] and moderate ocd. the excercise has helped a great deal, that is the only reason i mentioned it, and it is a hobby of mine. i take prozac, 20 mgs. for my ocd, and i am now trying nadh, a co-enzyme of niacin, which helps a great deal with energy, and raises dopamine somewhat!! i also take a multi-vitamin each day,and plenty of fish oil, 3 grams daily!!
i feel that ocd and depression will be part of my life for good, to some extent, but i try one day at a time, as i am sure eveyone here does, to try to do something in a positive direction. also prozac has helped me immensly, as well as therapy!! thanks tampa girl, and everyone else who welcomed me, i am so glad to be part of the group. i reallyneed the encouragement and support...john berk

Hello John,
What's with all the lurking????
HHHMMMM....you're a lurker eh? Tell me more about that.

But seriously, you sound terribly industrious. I used to run. It was good for the anxiety, helped me manage my moods. Any stomach problems from taking the fish oil??

HI SLEEPYGIRL. NOT REALLY A LURKER, JUST ALWAYS ENJOYED READING PSYCHO-BABBLE, AND FINALLY GOT THE GUMPTION TO JOIN, SO GLAD I DID. THE EXCERCISE I DO HAS BEEN A LIFE-LONG HABIT, SOMETHING OF A COPING MECHANISM, IT REALLY CENTERS ME. I'M NOT REALLY AS INDUSTRIOUS AS MY INITIAL POST MADE ME SEEM, LOL! ONLY WORKING PART-TIME, I STILL HAVE OCD SYMPTOMS, AND A GOOD DEAL OF ANXIETY. NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH THE FISH OIL , BUT I DO HAVE A STRONG STOMACH. IT, ALONG WITH NADH IS MADE A DIFFERENCE I CAN FEEL, ALTHOUGH PROZAC DOESN'T HURT EITHER, LOL. I'M FOCUSING MORE ON THERAPY AT THE MOMENT, THANK YOU FOR RESPONDING, HOPE TO TALK WITH YOU SOON. PEACE...JOHN BERK

Well John, it's nice to meet another one of the walking strugglers. I sincerely hope you're managing the OCD, I'm lucky not to have it...except for those lingering doubts while driving...HHmm..Did I run over that cyclist and just not realize it? But really, I'm just plagued with tremendous amounts of anxiety and depression. I know that OCD can be a real BITCH though!
