Before I use 'em (my flatmates aren't too reliable in that respect) and after I use 'em (because I am considerate).

Does that sound reasonable?
Now I am worried...

Wiping the counters? me? I hardly ever get round to it unless I make a big mess. My theory is if it looks clean, it will do. Germs are good for the immune system.

Hobbies are good. If you can keep your mind on them.
Here's a hobby. Splash a bit of bleach into a sink of water, soak your dishcloth in it (I'm talking a couple of tablespoonsful of bleach, not a half a cup) for a few minutes, THEN wipe your counters. People laugh about germs and stuff but when you're educated about it, it's not a laughing matter, not a joke, there are serious bacteria out there that make people sick every day, stuff, my darlings, that you bring home from the grocery store. Cutting open a fruit or vegetable without having first thoroughly cleansed it first can cross-contaminate so that even if you don't eat the skin, you've now got that nasty bug on other surfaces; so can using counters that haven't been properly cleaned.
Enough said, lecture over. Just once a day, bleach your cloths. And if you don't, the next time you get a serious ache in your tummy, think about where that bug came from.

They even make that stuff in a spray bottle. I always have to tell my hubby "that space...i.e. the sink or counter...is contaminated", when I am making chicken and have not had a chance to clean up yet.

Yucky.

In answer to the main question...I always wipe the counters down when I clean up after cooking. I also will when I notice that hubby has left crumbs or coffee rings on the counter. I even bought these glass "counter protectors" which are essentially like cutting boards.

He works around them. :(

In yet another sad blow to my blokiness, I have to admit to wiping them down before and after I use them.

so when you say 'regularly', do you mean several times a day or just once daily. i know i sound like i'm vying for martha stewarts show but i always find it fascinating to gauge my patterns to other peoples. I once even asked my pdoc what size a normal bowel movement should be and how often. but we won't go there this time.

actually what you say makes the most sense...not to worry about the counter staying pristine in between uses...just clean it before you use it and after. hmmm. maybe i can let go of my compulsive counter thing by using that approach. thanks alexandra!

again it looks like another vote for just before and after use. not a lot of in between cleaning after other people. thanks so much! my thought process on this household task is becoming more focused. why do i get the feeling i am the most anal on this subject of anyone? BECAUSE IT'S TRUE! YIKES!

yes, the counters are generally found in close proximity to that big white box (i've heard it's called the fridge).

And the winner is........over the top paper to the front, waterfall style IMHO :-) Hate the paper at the back!!!!!!!!!!!! Why???? Why does the sun rise in the East? I dunno, just because. I also put the seat down - just felt a need to go on the record with that ;-)

P.S: I caught myself contemplating whether to wipe or not wipe the kitchen bench last night and LMAO

actually mine aren't that close to the cold white box, but right around the white storage door with the big horizontal handle...you know, it's got wire shelves and get's hot if you move the funny dials on the outside?

agree with Damos. over the top...here's my (il)logic.

1) you can fold the end into a point and looks pretty for guests
2)easy to find the beginning and pull off for quick emergency
3)and MOST important for us OCDers...if it comes off the back i have this phobia that it touches everything behind it...it gets contaminated, dirty -goodness knows what's behind there!- and then where do you put it next?? eeeek. just thinking that gives me the willies. front please. don't let it touch anything else.
btw-i also everytime pull off enough tp for one circle -everything that is exposed to the air and immediately throw in stool, then use what's under.

man...i think i'm kinda creepy. wasteful too but i just CAN'T use it otherwise.
-did i share too much?

Yes, waterfall style. And I put the lid down, too. I once heard of a study that said when you flush the toilet, all kinds of germs are spewed into the air if the lid is up. Reason enough for me. That and no accidentally dropping stuff in.

i like to see someone else uses the word 'contaminated' in the kitchen. i use it when referring to the coffee mug i use in the car. my husband does the dishes at night and he will wash it by hand. i say it's still 'contaminated' (i.e. dirty, unsanitized) until it has been thru the dishwashers super highly heated water wash cycle. ah germs. but that's another topic.

p.s. i have now added your toilet paper 'thing' to my list of other anal 'things' i have. just what i needed, another 'thing'!!
