3 to 6 months for the redness to fade on my face.

"Scars are how the skin heals."

"Will this huge red spot (2" x 3") on my face scar"?

"Oh it will hardly be noticable, you can cover it with make-up".

"But yes, it will scar".

"Be sure to use sunscreen."

"Maybe you can try the thicker theatrical make-up"

"And we suggest you join our support group for 'burn victums', it would really help."

"So it's going to scar"?

"yes"

It's very important that you see a plastic surgeon to help minimize the scarring. I know people whose dermatologists might find a mole, but they will go to a plastic surgeon for removal and biopsy.

Check your insurance policy. SOMETIMES scars to the face are covered for restorative surgery when scars to other body areas are not. Good luck. emmy

Another option is microdermabrasion once everything heals. I have a friend who just went thru about 10 treatments for facial scarring and her improvements are drastic.

I'm just really in shock at the moment about it..can't think about fixing it, still reeling from the information.

Of course you are shocked by it- anyone would be. I can see why people have been suggesting ways of coping, which may well be useful later on.

But just at the moment you need to go thru the trauma of the news you were given. So insensitively too(doctors!! Sorry Dr B- its the ones outside mental health who are often not the best on the communication skills)

I dont know if you have a counsellor or anything to share your reaction with. Hope so. There may be some sort of relevant support group for/with other people who have more understanding of what its like to face this news.

There, I'm falling into the trap of making suggestions of options as well. You need to do, or not do, whatever feels right for you at the moment. Which may be being justifiably upset.

Take care.

Along with all the medical, group, et cetera, options...
How about some periodical bouts of RIGHTEOUS ANGER, mixed with some appropriate ACTING OUT!!!

I live in the sticks, so I can scream and wail and say whatever I want at the top of my lungs whenever I feel the desire to BE enraged. I go out and bust the lleh out of limbs (which become kindling or firewood) and listen to the echoes of my angry words, and usually end up amused or even laughing because I love the fact that
I
control
my
behavior.
And
sometimes
I
CHOOSE
to
behave
ANGRY.
I just do it where I'm the only one who gets to enjoy it.

Nice to meet you. I was burning weeds in the ditch and put gasoline on it. Something I have never done before. I then nelt down and used a lighter. Stupid, really stupid. I have no experience with that, and by not knowing, I had no idea it would explode. Had deep second degree burns on my face, lower arms and lower legs. It's been almost a month now, and most of it is healing fine. Just the thought of the scars scare me. I've heard of the Vitamin E, but can't find it at the local Wally World, will have to wait till I can get to a larger city to purchase. I'm using lots of lotion with Vitamin E in it, but people tell me that the pure E oil is better. Thank you for your concern, and once again, it's nice to meet you.

hi ada,

walgreens has the vitamin e oil in a bottle so you won't have to puncture the capsules.

they do mail order delivery. you can go online to walgreens.com and order it and have them mail it out. i remember reading the faster you can start using it the better.

golly that is horrible... as i am sure you feel the same way... i always had to learn things the hard way... hind sight is always 20/20... sure wish we didn't have to learn the hard way and that people would teach us helpful things to stop us from hurting our selves.. i fell against a cast iron water heater we used to burn trash in and lost 4 and 5 lasyers of skin.. no medical treatment mind ya.. my mom just put butter on it which held in the heat and made it worse.. if you ever get burned again put ice . or cold water on it..asap.never butter or cream..it holds the heat in... hope that this vitamin E helps you completely so you don't have to undergo. surgery... GOD bless you in your endevors..

I have a local pharmacy that carries the vitamin E so I am going right now to go get it.

How many layers of skin gone, I dont know, but do know this. It's been almost 4 weeks and it is still peeling. And grossly so. I don't even think they would do surgery on this. It is something I am going to have to deal with. I know there are so many out there who are grossly disfigured from burning accidents and I really need to get a grip on this and try to get over it, it's just the low self esteem I am dealing with that makes a mountain out of this molehill.

Thank you both for your help and concern.

I took three extreemly cold showers imidiately afterwards, no butter. It soothed the pain some, but didn't help much. That is when I descided medical intervention was needed. The pain was excrutiating.

hi ada,

when i burned my leg the hospital said it was good that i was in pain because if it is a reallllly bad burn (first, second, third whatever is the worse) you don't feel it because the nerve endings are shot. so MAYBE? you'll end up better than you think? i hope so. sending healing vibes your way.
